Valley Life: Lower Valley
Last Saturday’s Salmon and Cultural Celebration in Pateros was an opportunity for kids to release dozens of Pacific Lamprey into the Columbia. As the box was opened, eels wiggled all over the dock as kids squealed and either tried to save the eels or themselves. Biologist John Crandall spoke about the role lamprey fill to maintain healthy watersheds and salmon habitat. Mark Miller spoke about the cultural significance of the jawless fish that survived five mass extinction events. Danny Miller talked about his own childhood experience playing alongside the fish that existed before dinosaurs.
