Last month, the Miami Hurricanes landed a commitment from Sanford (Fla.) Seminole four-star IOL Max Buchanan, who has established himself as one of the best offensive linemen in the Sunshine State.

Over the last three years, Buchanan has been an anchor along the Seminole High School offensive line for head coach Karl Calhoun, who talked about his talents and his fit with the Hurricanes.

“Miami is a historic program with great coaches, and I know Max is excited about (Alex) Mirabal coaching him,” Calhoun told CaneSport. “He loves the culture and city over there in Miami, and they recruited him hard.”

Since his freshman year, the 6-foot-4, 279-pounder has been one of the largest players on his Seminoles squad, and Calhoun explained that he doesn’t just look the part; he plays it as well.

“I like how Max plays, how he’s looked at,” Calhoun said. “He plays big and strong. He’s a leader who works hard in the weight room, who’s vocal and has been a staple. He’s been starting for us since he was a freshman, and that says a lot. Over the last four years, he’s been great, and he’s a grinder.”

Known for his intensity and versatility, Buchanan has continued to progress in those areas and many more heading into his senior season, according to Calhoun.

“I think he has taken the biggest leaps and improvements in his power and point of attack,” Calhoun said. “He’s gotten a lot stronger as the years have gone by. He’s always had terrific footwork, and it’s very hard to maneuver and shake him. I also think his versatility and ability to play any position on the offensive line from left to right have just gotten better every year.”

When asked who Buchanan reminded him of, Calhoun named former Texas A&M and current Atlanta Falcon tackle Jake Matthews because of his versatility and ability to play multiple positions across the line.

“I think Max has been a staple, just like him,” Calhoun said. “He’s elusive, and he can move. I think he can play anywhere.”

Under Mirabal and head coach Mario Cristobal , who are known across the country as some of the top offensive line tacticians in college football, Calhoun believes Buchanan will thrive in Miami on and off the field.

“They’re getting a very respectful and humble young man who is going to work his butt off,” Calhoun said. “Someone who will do whatever it takes to help his team win, and a guy who’s going to be super competitive in the weight room, community, and classroom. He’s a competitor but also sociable and easily liked by everyone. Just a great all-around kid.”

According to the On3 Industry Ranking, Buchanan is the No. 282 overall prospect in the 2025 class. On3 ranks Buchanan higher than any other recruiting service as the No. 95 overall prospect and the No. 7 interior offensive lineman.
