Passengers traveling from Miami International Airport were met with grim scenes when they embarked on their journeys to celebrate the Fourth of July as the airport was flooded with a mysterious bright green liquid.

The fluorescent fluid leaked through the ceiling and coated a hallway in the airport . Photos show confused passengers attempting to maneuver around the bizarre-looking pool of liquid.

Wet floor signs were put in place as staff appeared to attempt to mop up the leak with paper towels before bringing in cleaning machines. Airport officials said the leak had come from a pipe in the building's Concourse G at around 9am Thursday.

“The valve feeding the pipe has been closed to stop the leaking, and cleanup efforts are now underway,” an airport spokesperson said in a statement. Officials reassured passengers that the liquid wasn't hazardous. Initially, investigators did not say what the liquid was.

But officials later revealed the mysterious fluid was water mixed with a green dye which had leaked from the building's air conditioning system, the New York post reports. An airport spokesperson explained that green dye is used in the liquid so that a leak can be quickly discovered and traced back to its source.

It took around 90 minutes for staff to clean the mess up. Passengers took to X to complain about the conditions: "Here right now…it’s so hot, musty, and gross. No AC in the whole terminal. Every one is sweating," one person wrote. Others claimed Miami International is the "worst" airport.

The strange incident comes as millions of people travel through US airports over the Fourth of July holiday in what is expected to be a record-breaking travel season.

The Transportation Security Administration estimates its officers will screen more than 3million travelers at US airports on Sunday alone. American Airlines said Sunday is expected to be its busiest day of the year with 6,500 flights scheduled.

TSA head David Pekoske reassured travelers that there's enough screeners to handle the expected crowds. “We have been totally tested over the course of the last couple of months in being able to meet our wait-time standards of 10 minutes for a PreCheck passenger and 30 minutes for a standard passenger, so we are ready,” Pekoske said on NBC’s Today show.

Meanwhile, AAA predicts that nearly 80millon people will travel at least 50 miles away from their homes this holiday season, which began on June 27. This marks a 5% increase from Independence Day last year.

They say most people will drive, warning traffic will be at its worst between 2pm and 7pm most days. The travel season has already seen several chaotic flight incidents.

On Wednesday a Delta Air Lines flight from Detroit to Amsterdam had to make an emergency landing at JFK after passengers were served spoiled meals on board. On the same day, an American Airlines flight bound for Manchester, New Hampshire, was also forced to divert after a man allegedly exposed himself and urinated in the aisle.
