It has been just over two weeks since Savannah (Ga.) Benedictine Military School EDGE Herbert Scroggins III committed to the Miami Hurricanes, and it’s safe to say the four-star prospect is happy about his decision.

“It feels good, and I’m glad I committed there,” Scroggins said. “I feel the love from all the fans and the coaches. I’m ready to get to work in December.”

While several factors factored into Scroggin’s decision to commit to the Canes over Auburn, the connection the Georgia native has built with the staff is second to none.

“Everybody, man, I’m not going to lie; it’s a whole bunch of energy,” Scroggins said. “Coach (Mario) Cristobal, coach D-Train (Dennis Smith), the energy there is different. You don’t see that every day from a coaching staff. Some coaches are just down to earth, but with them, they open up and talk to you. They’re real with you, and they’re funny. It’s crazy.”

During his junior season, the 6-foot-3, 215-pounder racked up a total of 84 tackles, 12 sacks, 10 tackles for loss, and three pass deflections for Benedictine Military School according to MaxPreps . He’s hoping to up those numbers during his final year of prep football.

“I have a great motor,” Scroggins said. “I go to a military school, so that discipline aspect is in me, and I just want to get after it. I have great hands, my speed, my first step, and I can close distances very fast. That’s what separates me.”

While Scroggins was recently given his fourth star, the No. 380 overall prospect in the 2025 class according to the On3 Industry Ranking, still believes he has much to prove before he makes his way to Coral Gables.

“To me, in my opinion, I feel like I’m the best edge rusher in the nation,” Scroggins said. “Just who I am and my motor. It put a big chip on my shoulder. I had to get better day-by-day. It didn’t really come easy. My freshman year, I was 170 pounds, and I wasn’t that tall. Sophomore year, people were doubting me, saying I was too small and undersized, and I proved them wrong. Look at me now with 26 offers and committed to the U.”

When he does arrive in Miami, Scroggins is hoping to either major in mechanical engineering or pursue a medical degree.

“I’m trying to major in mechanical engineering,” Scroggins said. “That’s been my goal since I was small. I always wanted to do that because my grandfather was a mechanic. I love cars, and I love how they function. They function like your body. What you put in is what you get out. When I get to Miami, if I don’t do that, I want to get into the medical field.”

In CaneSport’s latest installment of Inside The Lines we catch up with Scroggins, who talks about his game, why he chose Miami over Auburn, his ‘why’, and more.
