Florida gas prices just dropped by double digits. What about Miami? Look at the change

Florida drivers are feeling some relief this week after average gas prices dropped by double digits.

Prices surged in the days leading to July 4 as travelers set off on trips. Drivers paid 27 cents more a gallon in Florida than they did over last year’s holiday, according to AAA.

Things have changed over the past week. Prices are down about 18 cents a gallon across Florida and 15 cents in the Miami area.

Monday’s state average of $3.35 a gallon is the lowest since July 1, according to AAA.

“Futures prices have fallen the past two weeks, to the lowest levels in more than a month,” said AAA spokesperson Mark Jenkins. “This lowered the cost of gasoline production. However, Florida gas prices have been erratic this summer and an early week rally is not out of the question.”

In Miami-Dade, where the average price per gallon was $3.35 on Monday, prices are about 3 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and about 10 cents lower than a year ago, according to GasBuddy.

North Florida remains the cheapest region to get gas in the state, about 20 cents lower per gallon than South Florida. Palm Beach County and Tallahassee are among the most expensive areas for gas, according to AAA.

    What the experts are saying

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy: ““Most of the country has seen a reprieve from rising gasoline prices, thanks to weaker-than-expected gasoline demand, building supplies and a quiet period in the tropics. While a good portion of the nation saw average gas prices decline, severe weather completely knocked out power to a major refinery outside Chicago early last week, immediately impacting gasoline supplies to Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan, and pushing prices up considerably. We’ve often said how critical refineries are, and with a long power outage, we’re seeing the impact very quickly, but relief will eventually arrive. For now, as we approach the end of summer vacations, I’m hopeful gas prices will continue to edge slightly lower in the week ahead.”

How to find cheap gas near you

There’s an app to help: The GasBuddy app was built to show motorists prices around them and a fuel tracker can update users on stations that have or don’t have fuel based on supply changes.
