NFL analyst says Miami Dolphins former trade acquisition in danger of being cut

When the Miami Dolphins hired head coach Mike McDaniel away from the San Francisco 49ers , he needed some established veterans familiar with his system to come in and help Miami with the transition installing his system. Cue the Dolphins signing former 49ers wide receiver Trent Sherfield and eventually trading for running back Jeff Wilson.

Sherfield moved on from the team prior to last season, signing a deal with the Dolphins’ division rivals, the Buffalo Bills . Now, at least according to one NFL analyst, it looks like Wilson could soon be out the door as well. Pro Football Network’s NFL analyst Dakota Randall projected one cut candidate for each team , and his pick for the Dolphins is the former free agent signee.

Wilson has spent portions of the past two seasons with the Dolphins, but has largely failed to catch on with the team, starting just one game in that time. The emergence of another former 49ers running back, Raheem Mostert, relegated Wilson to a backup role, and the breakout performances of last year’s third-round pick De’Von Achane further solidified Wilson’s role as simply a depth piece in the event of injury.

Even that role took a further hit this spring, as the Dolphins drafted another young running back, this time being Jaylen Wright in the fourth round out of Tennessee. With that many young, talented running backs on the depth chart, it makes sense for Randall to single out Wilson as the odd man out in this scenario.

Wilson likely won’t ever see playing time in Miami unless a lot of things go wrong, and even keeping him on as an insurance piece may be more than the team is willing to commit to.
