Plantation (Fla.) American Heritage 2025 four-star running back Byron Louis took a handful of official visits last month to Miami, Wisconsin, Georgia and Florida State. After seeing some of his top schools, Louis is beginning to narrow things down as he inches closer to finding a home.

“I feel great about things, and I feel like those visits did what they had to do,” Louis said. “I saw what I needed to see. I’ve visited those schools prior, so it wasn’t anything new but more focused on talking about my development and how they will shape me into the man I want to become.”

At the moment Louis, who is the No. 222 overall prospect in the 2025 class according to the On3 Industry Ranking, has not yet set a commitment date.

He is in no rush to commit and is focused on his senior year at American Heritage, where he’s looking to outdo his junior campaign (he rushed for 1,224 yards and 18 touchdowns for the Patriots last season).

“Right now I’m just focused on this season and making sure I’m good,” Louis said. “It’s ultimately about just making the best decision for myself.”

Since Louis left Miami in June following his official visit with the Hurricanes, communication has remained consistent with multiple staff members, including head coach Mario Cristobal and running backs coach Matt Merritt along with Benedick Hyppolite .

“There has been no drop off in communication,” Louis said. “I still talk to coach Cristobal, Merritt, Hypolite, and all those guys down there. Nothing has changed.”

While the Hurricanes have remained a contender through Louis’ recruitment, Miami is facing stiff competition with Wisconsin, Florida State and Georgia also pushing for a commitment.

At the end of the day, Louis explained that his decision will come down to where he feels like he’ll be able to succeed the most on and off the field.

“It’s just going to come down to what I think is the best situation for me,” Louis said. “It’s not necessarily something that they can do, but just making sure that all the pieces are in line for me to come in and succeed and become groomed into the man that I want to be.”

    CaneSport’s take

With one running back already committed in the 2025 class with four-star prospect Girard Pringle on the board, the Canes are looking to add a second back this class with Louis a key target along with Shekai Mills-Knight and Ousmane Kromah . None of the three backs have a commitment date set.
