CaneSport is breaking down the top 30 Miami players on the roster based on projected production, and today we’re at No. 7, Andy Borregales .

    THE BIG PICTURE

Borregales returns as one of the nation’s top kickers after making 22 of 26 attempts last season with a long of 51. Miami gets inside the 30, he is pretty much automatic. With experience and results, he’s as solid as they come – in his three-year career Borregales has made 56 of 67 field goal attempts (83.6 percent) and 121 of 122 extra points. He’s going to try and chase older brother Jose’s Lou Groza Award win from his own stellar year at Miami.

JULY PLAYER PERFORMANCE INDEX: No. 30 Elijah Alston , No. 29 Josh Horton , No. 28 Raul Aguirre No. 27 D’yoni Hill No. 26 Samson Okunlola No. 25 Jaden Harris No. 24 Markeith Williams No. 23 Akheem Mesidor No. 22 Jaylin Alderman No. 21 Damari Brown No. 20 Wesley Bissainthe No. 19 Simeon Barrow/CJ Clark No. 18. Elijah Arroyo No. 17. Sam Brown No. 16 Elija Lofton No. 15 Zach Carpenter No. 14 Tyler Baron No. 13 Mishael Powell No. 12 Dylan Joyce No. 11 Francis Mauigoa No. 10 Daryl Porter, Jr. No. 9 Anez Cooper No. 8 Jacolby George

    THE ANALYSIS

Borregales is in his final year at Miami and we’d expect him to continue to do what he’s shown over his previous three seasons – consistency and leg strength that extends past 50 yards. He’s one of the nation’s top kickers, and this past season he hit on 22 of 26 field goals (80 percent) with one blocked. Of his 73 kickoffs, 46 were touchbacks (63 percent) with only one out of bounds. He hit a long field goal of 51 twice – against Florida State and Louisville. He also converted 44 of 45 extra points. You can’t really ask for more than that. Prior to last season? Borregales hit 17 of 21 field goals as a true freshman in 2021 (long of 55) and in 2022 made 17 of 20 with a long of 49. He improved his kickoff touchback percentage from 45.1 percent in 2021 to 64.9 percent in 2022 and then was at the aforementioned 63 percent this past season. He was an All-ACC First Team pick last year and was a Lou Groza Award semifinalist. Winning the Groza Award this year is a legitimate goal.

    THE PROJECTION

Borregales is an extremely reliable kicker with a strong leg, and given Miami’s anticipated prolific offense this season he should be kept quite busy. Last year he ranked No. 13 in the nation in field goals made and No. 23 in field goal percentage , and he could crack the top 5 or 10 in both this year. His impact on games can’t be underestimated, as his kickoff touchback consistency helps in hidden yards while close games could hinge on his talented foot making field goals.

THE JUMP HE NEEDS FROM SPRING TO FALL CAMP

He’s already proven plenty over his first three years, so really fall camp for Borregales is just about continuing to go about his craft with consistency. He is already one of the nation’s top kickers, and in this year’s high-powered offense he should have plenty of chances to shine. He’s gained weight, up to close to 200 pounds, and has improved leg strength. So maybe Mario Cristobal will let him attempt a 60-yarder? His range and accuracy is excellent, so this is one position Miami really doesn’t have any worries about. There’s really no jump needed, just keep doing what he’s shown in the past at such a high level.
