Marlins shopping star closer at trade deadline, seeking "giant return"

The Miami Marlins have been selling aggressively this year at the trade deadline.

They recently traded left-handed reliever Taylor Rogers to the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for outfielder Kyle Stowers and infield prospect Connor Norby.

However, they don't appear to be done just yet. The team is well out of contention and taking calls on several more of their stars.

In fact, they have been shopping one of their top relievers, according to Jon Heyman.

"Marlins said to be asking for 'giant return' for dominant lefty closer Tanner Scott," Heyman wrote on Twitter. "Actually, that's understandable in this sellers environment."

Scott likely will fetch the Marlins quite a massive return, especially considering what they got for Rogers, who has struggled this season. The 30-year-old lefty is 6-5 with a 1.18 ERA in 44 appearances with the struggling Marlins. In addition, he's struck out 53 batters and posted a 1.01 WHIP in 45.2 innings pitched.

The veteran reliever is clearly one of the top relievers on the market, and with the Marlins already out of contention and selling, it would make sense for them to trade him.

It would be wise for them to wait for the right offer so that they can maximize their return for him. Miami owns the third-worst record in baseball this year at 39-67. They sit 17 games back in the Wild Card race and 26 games back of first place in the National League East. After a surprise run to October last season, the team's hopes are essentially crushed for 2024.
