Miami Hurricanes DT Simeon Barrow not shy about goals: “We can be the best defensive line in college football”

If you want some old school Canes style verbal swagger, look no further than Michigan State DT Simeon Barrow , who arrived as a second transfer portal addition.

“We can be the best defensive line in college football,” he says. “That’s the standard, man.”

Also from Barrow: “When you put on the film, we’re just going to go crazy, man.”

Oh, and he also says that “We expect to be the best defense in the ACC. We’ve got the tools, have the coaching staff, just have to execute during fall camp and we’ll be right there.”

Barrow joins fellow DT transfers CJ Clark and Marley Cook, and all three are expected to play a role on the interior.

“I just approach it day by day, we just want to be the best,” Barrow said. “It’s not about me, I want the whole D line to succeed. My main thing coming out of this camp is building chemistry and learning to play off each other, have chemistry on the field, have the mindset that no O lineman is going to mess with us.”

Barrow had 36 tackles and 3.5 sacks last season, and he’s a guy that can hold up against the run and also has enough burst to get after the QB.

He says he chose UM because of “the culture, the coaching staff and players we’ve got. I want to win games, and I feel we have the guys and tools to do that.”

Barrow started 10 games for the Spartans each of the last three years and in addition to his 3.5 sacks last year he had 40 tackles, nine for losses, with four sacks in 2022, and in 2021 as a redshirt freshman he ended with 34 tackles, four TFL and three sacks.

As for Barrow’s Pro Football Focus grades? This past season in 469 reps he had a 72.2 overall grade (72.3 run defense, 74.3 pass rush, low 29.6 tackle grade). He was noted with 11 missed tackles and 17 QB hurries. His 2022 grade was 77.4 percent (76.4 run defense, 70.0 tackle, 70.1 pass rush) and he had just three missed tackles in 537 reps with 19 QB hurries. In 2021 he had a 71.5 overall grade in 442 reps (69.5 run defense, 70.9 pass rush, 51.7 tackle grade) with seven missed tackles and 17 QB hurries.

“The only difficult thing (after arriving at Miami) was the weather, man,” Barrow said. “The humidity and all that, that’s a little difficult. But it’ll get better after fall camp.”

A 6-3, 280-pounder, Barrow did briefly leave the Miami program after arriving. He didn’t address that, though.

What he did say is that coaches are “going to grow us to be a better football team, defensive line group. I’m super excited about that.”

Certainly Miami needs Barrow to come out of the gate playing really well this fall. If he does, with freshman All-American Rueben Bain and talented transfers Tyler Baron and Elijah Alston new additions at end, the sky should be the limit for this defensive attack up front.

Barrow says he’s working mainly on the same side as Clark so far, and there should be a rotation that sees several linemen get a lot of reps.

“(Lance Guidry), he wants me to play bully ball, man,” Barrow said.
