Former Marlins Star Excelling on New Team

The Miami Marlins (40-70) declared that they were sellers early in the 2024 season. Trading Luis Arraez to the San Diego Padres (59-52) indicated that the Fish were in for a long season. One player that the Marlins traded away leading into the 2024 MLB Trade Deadline has gotten off to a spectacular start with his new club, Jazz Chisholm Jr.

The Marlins traded Chisholm to the New York Yankees (65-46) for three prospects, and Chisholm has found himself right at home in the bright lights of New York City.

Through his first five games with the Yankees, Chisholm has batted .304/.333/.826 with four home runs, eight RBI, and a 211 OPS+. While it is a very small sample size of only 24 plate appearances, it dwarfs his .249/.323/.407 line with 13 home runs, 50 RBI, and a 101 OPS+ that he had with the Marlins this season.

The Yankees have deployed Chisholm at third base mostly since acquiring him, a position he has never played before in the Majors, and he has performed like he was always meant to be a third baseman. He has not had enough defensive opportunities for the metrics to properly measure him as of yet, but, he does have a better success rate (67%) than his expected success rate (64%) per Baseball Savant.

Chisholm was destined to be traded this season, the only question leading into the 2024 MLB Trade Deadline was, to who? The Yankees have seemingly made the right choice in acquiring the young star, and it will be fun to watch him develop as a third baseman for Yankees as the season goes on.
