    Marlins Claim Outfielder Off Waivers

The Miami Marlins are adding to their outfield depth as they have claimed Derek Hill off waivers on Saturday. Hill was designated for assignment by the San Francisco Giants on Friday.

The 28-year-old outfielder from Des Moines, IA played for both the Giants and Texas Rangers this season. Earlier this year, The Rangers had signed him to a minor league deal before he came to the big leagues for a few weeks. He was then let go by the team and re-signed another minor league deal with them. Afterward, another few weeks went by before the Giants got him off waivers.

During his time with the Giants, he played just five games putting up a line of 250/.308/.417 in 13 plate appearances, going three for 12 with two RBIs and scored three runs. That's on top of .255/.293/.455 line overall this year if you combine those statistics with his time as a Ranger.

Despite not getting much opportunities to play due to constant moving around from club to club, Hill has been decent on both offense and defense. He has experience playing in all three spots in the outfield. There is a good chance the Marlins could give him a good amount of at-bats moving forward given his decent batting average numbers.

It's also worth noting that Hill has yet to qualify for arbitration and he can be controlled for four additional seasons after this one. It looks like the Marlins got themselves a nice pickup with this move.
