The Atlanta Braves (60-50) couldn't get enough offense going on Saturday night to win a seventh straight game against the Miami Marlins (41-70). Sunday afternoon they face off in game four with a chance to win the series.
Sunday morning the Braves reinstated LHP Max Fried (7-5, 3.08) from the injured list and optioned Dylan Lee to Triple-A Gwinnett as the corresponding move. Fried was placed on the IL back on July 21 with left forearm neuritis, and the forecast for his absence was very uncertain. After throwing several bullpen sessions since being shelved, Fried is asymptomatic and ready to return to action. The news of his return is a huge sigh of relief for Atlanta who desperately needs his arm in the rotation for the rest of 2024.
Fried threw an inning during the All-Star Game, but his last start was on July 11 against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He took the loss but pitched well, giving up just one run and striking out seven hitters over six innings of work. Sunday he will return to the mound facing a Marlins team he's had great success against in recent years. Over his last four starts against Miami, Fried is 4-0 with a 0.68 ERA including a complete game shutout in Miami back on April 23 of this year. The Braves are hoping Fried will pick up where he left off in July and help earn the team a second straight series victory.
RHP Edward Cabrera (1-3, 6.65) will get the start for Miami. In his fourth season with the Marlins, the right-hander has had his fair share of troubles. Over his last four starts, he is 0-1 with a 6.38 ERA and six homers allowed. Command has been an issue for Cabrera as well who has walked 11 batters over that span. His ERA skyrockets to 9.39 on the road this year. The Braves have faced Miami's starter three times in his career. Cabrera is 0-1 with a 4.38 ERA against Atlanta in those games.
The Braves are just 4-5 in Sunday home games this season but are 11-2 against the Marlins at Truist Park over the last two seasons.
