Smorgasburg Miami is closing — but just for now.

The outdoor weekend food market from New York, which opened in Wynwood in March of 2022, is shutting down for about a month, with Aug. 31 as its final day.

Owner Gaston Becherano, who calls the venue at 2600 NW Second Ave. a “Disneyland for food,” said that after two and a half years, it was time for an update.

“We’ve been operating non-stop for the last couple of years and wanted to use this small break in September to make Smorgasburg the most exciting it’s ever been,” he said.

Improvements during the time off will include the addition of more seating, new landscaping and — maybe the most important — more shade. The outdoor market can get steamy during Miami’s never-ending summer.

The venue is also opening up five new spots for vendors that want to pop up every weekend at the market. In addition to the five new spaces to be filled, there are 25 returning vendors, plus 10 new vendors already confirmed.

The venue is scheduled to reopen the weekend of Sept. 28-29, but before then it’s hosting a “Hui Hou! End of Summer Luau” Saturday, Aug. 31. The event will run from 2-10 p.m., with live music after 7 p.m. Vendors will host specials throughout the night.

Smorgasburg Miami is a sister to the original Smorgasburg in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The smaller Smorgasburg on Lincoln Road in Miami Beach closed earlier this summer.
