Celebrate Indiana's newest shipwreck preserve. Or wander prairie wildflowers in full bloom.

Do ya get seasick? No problem. The festivities for a new shipwreck preserve in Lake Michigan are all on shore. Or, if you're even more of a landlubber, how about prairie flowers in full bloom.

Here are some offerings from this week's Outdoor Adventures column.

    Shipwreck dedication

Indiana will dedicate its second shipwreck nature preserve July 18 for the USS Muskegon, which sunk in 1911 in Lake Michigan near the Indiana Dunes’ Mount Baldy. The public can attend a celebration from 1:30 to 4 p.m. CDT at the Old Lighthouse Museum, 100 Heisman Harbor Road, Michigan City, with a ceremony at 3:30 p.m. A model of the Muskegon and its artist will be there, plus food trucks.

Charles Beeker of Indiana University's Center for Underwater Science, and state and national parks staff will visit the preserve itself to install a mooring buoy, place a bronze commemorative plaque in the water and take underwater photos.

    Prairie hike

Take a guided 1.5-mile hike at Burns Prairie Preserve near Galien at 10 a.m. July 20 to see an array of prairie flowers in bloom. The Harbor Country Hikers offer this hike, led by Chikaming Open Lands steward Robert Wagner.

From U.S. 12, about 1.4 miles east of Galien, go southeast on Mount Zion Road for about .75 miles. Watch for the preserve sign on the left and park along the roadside.
