Popular Spice Recalled Across Michigan Poses Risk Of 'Fatal Infection'

UBC Food Distributors voluntarily recalled 7oz plastic containers of Ground Black Pepper under the Baraka brand name on Monday (June 3) due to the possible presence of life-threatening bacteria. According to The United States Food & Drug Administration , this specific spice has the "potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, defined by the administration as "an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems."

7oz plastic containers of Ground Black Pepper under the Baraka brand name included in the recall feature a UPC code of 8 22514 26626 6 and an expiration date of January 2026 printed on the back label. Individuals who purchase and consume this spice run the risk of Salmonella symptoms including but not limited to fever, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, and in serious cases, arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.

The FDA noted that this item was sold in retail stores nationwide . Product production has been suspended as of June 3rd. Customers should avoid consuming this product and should return it to the place they purchased it for a full refund.
