Fewer CMSD students missing school, but gaps persist for Black students and students with disabilities
Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) saw a dip this year in chronic absenteeism, which is when a student misses at least 10% of classroom days. CEO Warren Morgan told school board members at a recent meeting he expects that to drop even further when attendance numbers for the full school year are final. Black students and students with disabilities, however, showed more modest gains in attendance.
Case Elementary School to become healthcare career training center
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The former Cleveland Center for Arts and Technology Elementary School will see new life in education thanks to a local nonprofit. New Bridge Cleveland, a nonprofit that provides youth and adult learning programs, has acquired Case Elementary School at 4050 Superior Avenue. The 66,000-square-foot building, which was built in the 1970s, is set to be renovated and redesigned to become a “state-of-the-art” workforce training center, a news release announced.
Notre Dame College delays final paychecks; Cleveland schools word choice worries parent
After closing its doors to students at the end of the spring semester, Notre Dame College has been winding down operations. But even that is producing more heartache for the faculty and staff who are losing their jobs. An internal email obtained by Signal Cleveland says the college has delayed issuing its final paychecks. It’s not clear if the college – which was forced to shut down after more than 100 years because of mounting financial debt – has the money.
