With its transformation complete, Independence Mall celebrates 45 years in business
Standing in the children's apparel section, Dillard’s employee Angela Whaly reminisces about the changes she’s seen at Wilmington’s Independence Mall. While it’s not as busy as it once was, she said, it’s still the spot to be. The mall is more than a shopping destination. It’s a place of history and community, said Whaly, who also worked at Belk for more than 30 years.

Edenton Announces Interim Police Chief
EDENTON – The Town of Edenton and the Edenton Police Department are pleased to announce that Mr. George Robinson has been named Interim Police Chief, effective Aug. 1, 2024. While in Edenton, Interim Chief Robinson will step in to lead the police force amidst the retirement of Chief Henry A. King Jr, continuing Chief King’s legacy and upholding the same precedents and professional standards that have been put in place by his leadership. He will also assist the administration with the ongoing nationwide search for a permanent police chief.
Board of Commissioners chairman discusses public safety funding in budget
Nash County Board of Commissioners Chairman Robbie Davis told Rotarians at a recent weekly luncheon of the Rocky Mount Rotary Club that if anyone says he and fellow commissioners are not properly funding public safety, then he has the following reply: “It’s not quite true.” Davis said if the newly approved county budget is not adequately funding fire services, emergency medical services, the sheriff’s office and emergency management, then he does not really know what else to do. ...

NCDHHS Celebrates Two Years of 9-8-8
The NC Department of Health and Human Services this week celebrates the second anniversary of the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. In the past two years, 988 crisis counselors in North Carolina have responded to nearly 190,000 calls, texts and chats, providing critical access to mental health and substance use crisis support. In its second year of service, the number of North Carolinians contacting 988 each month has nearly doubled.
