Apple picking family fun is just a short drive away.

Apples in New Mexico are in season, and you can be harvesting your own in less than 2 hours.

The late summer family-friendly activity is not only a fun excuse to get out of the city for the day, but it’s also an excellent way to eat fresh and support local area farms.

There are three family-run U-Pick orchards a day trip away from El Paso in the Land of Enchantment that you can visit for fresh off the tree crunch.

Each farm specializes in some of the most-popular apple varieties perfect for eating raw, baking, and applesauce making. They also offer already-picked apples, ready-made apple pies, cider, and apple jams and jellies.

Nichols Ranch and Orchards, La Luz

Nichols Ranch and Orchards in La Luz outside of Alamogordo offers some of the more popular apple varieties. Gala and Honeycrisp to start with and other types such as Macintosh and Red Delicious as the season continues.

They are open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and typically remain open through mid to late October. Price for u-pick is $2 per pound.

Cadwallader Mountain Farms, Mountain Park

Not far from Nichols Ranch is Cadwallader Mountain Farms located in Mountain Park, New Mexico.

Traipse through their orchard Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through the end of September.

U-Pick Mesilla Valley Apples, Las Cruces

The Burke Family Orchard is home to three-hundred apple trees ripening as you read this. Their U-Pick season gets underway Labor Day Weekend and runs through mid-October depending on availability.
