San Diego International Airport is set to become a busier hub this summer, as Alaska Airlines introduces new routes to popular destinations including Washington D.C., Eugene, Oregon, and Tampa, Florida. These additions to Alaska's flight schedule come just in time for the surge of summer travel, catering to San Diego locals eager to explore other parts of the country.

Starting this Thursday, passengers can board direct flights from San Diego (SAN) to Eugene Airport (EUG) and Dulles International Airport (IAD), with a special send-off celebration planned for the inaugural trips. Those interested in visiting the Gulf Coast will have to wait a bit longer, as service to Tampa International Airport (TPA) is slated to begin in October.

The introduction of these non-stop routes marks Alaska Airlines' return to pre-pandemic levels of activity, boasting 1,200 daily flights to over 120 cities. Despite an expected rush of travelers on June 30, the Friday preceding Independence Day, the airline is well-prepared. With a staffing level 6% higher than in 2019 and twice the number of pilots graduating monthly compared to 2022, Alaska Airlines is ready to accommodate the summer surge.

"We're excited to add service on both the West and East Coasts, including the nation’s capital, Florida’s vibrant Gulf Coast as well as to beautiful Eugene, Oregon," said Neil Thwaites, regional vice-president of California for Alaska Airlines. "Our guests will now have three more non-stop destinations to choose from as they plan out their travel."

The new flights out of SAN will feature a three-class cabin, with First Class and Premium Class passengers enjoying early boarding and generous legroom, distinguishing Alaska Airlines from other domestic carriers. For frequent flyers, the airline offers a unique subscription service, the Flight Pass. This pay-by-month deal covers flights throughout California and to select cities such as Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, and Phoenix.

Kimberly Becker, of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, commended the move, saying, “We appreciate Alaska Airlines growing its service at SAN and their continued partnership. Our community will benefit from the addition of these new nonstop routes between our sunny Southern California region and the East Coast and the Pacific Northwest.”

The new routes are not just a testament to Alaska Airlines' growth but also a sign of the travel industry's overall resilience. As the world starts to navigate post-pandemic life, these new non-stop flights out of San Diego will offer locals more flexibility and choice for their travel plans.
