The excitement of football season has arrived as Milford High School’s Buccaneers gear up for their season opener at Mount Pleasant High School this Friday at 3:30 PM. The team, which recently completed its final scrimmage against Tower Hill, showcases a blend of talent and youth, promising an intriguing season ahead.

Milford’s offensive unit looked particularly strong during the scrimmage, with a standout performance from junior fullback Gregory Lockett. Lockett demonstrated a powerful running style and provided key blocking, enabling the Buccaneers to execute a fluid running game. When defenses keyed in on Lockett, Milford’s offense successfully shifted to the outside, utilizing underclassmen T.J. Perry, Andrew Sivels, and Shawn Lovett. Head Coach Jed Bell expressed confidence in the young talent, noting, “Behind Greg, we are very excited about our younger guys. They are very talented and we know they will continue to improve as the season goes on.”

Leading the team from the quarterback position is junior Cayden Jarett, a transfer from Early College School at DSU. Jarett has quickly adapted to Milford’s system, showcasing a strong arm and a solid understanding of the offense, despite being new to the team. “Cayden has come in here with a really great attitude and has taken well to the offense,” Bell commented. “We will be able to expand the playbook as the season progresses. He is very dedicated and smart. He has made a few mistakes, but I expect them to go away as the season moves on.”

On defense, Milford has introduced a new scheme, predominantly featuring a 3-5 front. While Tower Hill was able to move the ball at times during the scrimmage, this was largely attributed to the youth of Milford’s players and their need to adapt to the new system. Coach Bell acknowledged the challenges but remained optimistic, stating, “We believe the front we were in today is best suited for the players we have on this team. It’s not an easy adjustment for most of these players, as they are being asked to do things they have never done before in many cases. I know once everyone gets a better feel for it, they will improve.”

The youth movement is also evident in the offensive line, anchored by sophomore Chris Koslowski at center, with juniors Wyatt Lane and Jayden Sylvester at guard positions. Sophomore Azion Rodriguez and junior Kaiser Seward are set to fill the tackle positions. Despite their inexperience, Coach Bell emphasized the dedication and talent of these young athletes, stating, “There is no mistaking it; we are a young team, but these guys are dedicated to improving and are very talented athletes. There will be mistakes, but it isn’t about that so much right now as it is heart.”

Looking ahead, Coach Bell is optimistic about the team’s potential, recognizing that the path may not be smooth but believing in the collective effort of the team. “We are very excited about the opportunity that is ahead of us. We know it’s not going to be a smooth process, but if we all believe in each other, we are going to be a good football team in the end. The bottom line is, if you want to make it happen, you will. That is what everyone is learning.”

The anticipation builds as Milford’s Buccaneers prepare to take the field this Friday, signaling the start of what promises to be a season of growth and development for this young team.
