One dead after crash on SR 2
A South Bend man was killed in a crash on State Road 2. The collision happened around 10 a.m. on Sunday, June 30, near the interchange for the U.S. 31 bypass. Witnesses reported a red Chevy SUV traveling westbound lost control as it approached the bypass entrance ramp — first driving into the grass median, then striking the concrete supporting wall under the bridge, and coming to a stop in the northwest cloverleaf of the interchange.

Two fires under investigation at Matthys Little League Park in South Bend
SOUTH BEND — The South Bend Fire Department is investigating two fires over the weekend at Matthys Little League Park. The fire department reported it was called to 4700 W. Meadow Lane around 7:29 p.m. June 28 and again at 5:50 p.m. June 29. The small fires happened in separate structures at the park and were extinguished without injury to firefighters. The property is currently vacant, a press release said.
North Judson, Hamlet Fire Departments Respond to Structure Fires
Two structure fires were called into the Starke County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center over the weekend. The North Judson-Wayne Township Fire Department was called to a fire at 2460 W. State Road 10 in North Judson Saturday, June 29 in the afternoon where firefighters were able to take quick action to knock down the fire. Fire Chief Todd Jackson told WKVI News that there was 65 percent damage to the structure and the fire remains under investigation. The home owner suffered minor injuries, as well as another individual working at the residence. Both were transported from the scene by Starke County EMS.
