A new baby porcupine — a porcupette — was born at the Milwaukee County Zoo on June 4.

The porcupette — which will be named by the zoo's animal care team — is the fifth baby born to mom Quinn and dad Seamus. The adult porcupines are designated a breeding pair by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Species Survival Plan , and the baby likely will be transferred to another zoo when she gets older.

According to an announcement by the zoo, the porcupette, which was 435 grams at birth, had been having trouble gaining weight. After zookeepers separated the baby from Quinn and supplemented her food with formula by hand, she was able to rejoin her mom and start nursing again. A month after her birth, she had nearly doubled her weight.

Now the porcupette is nursing, nibbling on sticks and branches and particularly enjoying sweet potato and rodent chow, according to the zoo.

Visitors can see the porcupine family in the nocturnal side of the zoo's small mammals building. According to the zoo announcement, the baby "has been very curious, mobile and active since birth, climbing in the branches and easily navigating to the top of the habitat."
