Brewers acquiring Frankie Montas from Reds ahead of MLB trade deadline

Frankie Mantas will be taking his talents to Milwaukee after the Brewers moved to acquire the starter from the Reds on Monday night, The Post’s Jon Heyman confirmed .

The righty joins a Brewers rotation that has been impacted by injury after signing a one-year deal with the Reds in the offseason.

Milwaukee will send outfielder Joey Wiemer and right-hander Jakob Janis the other way, MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reported.

Montas made 19 starts for the  Reds this season and posted a 5.01 ERA while striking out 78 batters over 93 ⅓ innings, which isn’t exactly knocking the socks off anyone this year.

He had gotten off to a good start in his new midwest home when he started the season with a 3.36 ERA through his first six starts before cooling down to record a 5.56 ERA since then.

New York baseball fans will remember Montas for a less-than-stellar stint with the Yankees after they acquired him at the MLB trade deadline in 2022.

The longtime A’s starter admitted that he wasn’t fully healthy when the Yanks acquired him and went on to have a 6.35 ERA in eight starts that season before having shoulder surgery in February.

Montas then went on to miss nearly the entire 2023 season.

Still, the Yankees had considered bringing him back before this season and Montas confirmed that it was in the cards when he visited The Bronx earlier this month with the Reds.

“Definitely, there was consideration,” Montas said. “But things didn’t work out. This is the business side of baseball.”

The hope for Milwaukee is that it can get Montas back into form where he was earlier in the season as they look to maintain their control of the National League Central.

The Brewers entered Monday with a six-game lead in the division.

During his visit to The Bronx this month, Montas expressed confidence that he was improving since the rough stint with the Yankees.

“Every time I step on the mound, I feel better,” Montas said at the time. “My arm feels better, my pitches are moving better, so it’s just improving from here.”
