It's been a rough tornado season and a new Illinois law is taking aim at that. We can all agree it's been a messy summer. In the Chicago area alone last week, there were 33 tornadoes, compared to their usual 5 or 6 per year. With the derecho that moved through last week, 5 tornadoes rolled through the QCA. In Iowa, May was ridiculous. We average 11 tornadoes in May. But this year, we had over 80 tornadoes in May alone.

Des Moines man arrested for Friday morning stabbing at Clive hotel
A Des Moines man was arrested and charged for stabbing a man at a hotel in Clive early Friday morning. Clive Police Department officers were dispatched to the Days Inn, 1600 NW 114th St., around 3:30 a.m. for a reported stabbing, police said in a news release. Mannel hired as ISU Extension regional director
Lori Mannel of Jefferson has accepted the position of regional director for Iowa State University Extension and Outreach serving Carroll, Greene, Boone and Guthrie counties in central Iowa. As regional director, Mannel will provide administrative leadership to county extension office staff and guidance to county extension councils. Mannel was most recently the county director for ISU Extension and Outreach Greene County. Mannel earned her bachelor’s degree in business management from Buena Vista University, Storm Lake.
