DMACC to host ‘Doc Ops Day’ training for inaugural class of emergency medicine residents at UnityPoint Health
The Des Moines Area Community College fire science technology, emergency medical technician and paramedic programs will host a hands-on “Doc Ops Day” training event for the inaugural class of emergency medicine residents from UnityPoint Health – Des Moines. The event aims to help physicians understand the role of first responders through a variety of exercises, including Jaws of Life extraction, a forcible entry door simulation and navigating an obstacle course while dressed in full emergency gear. The “Doc Ops” event will take place on July 10 at the DMACC Fire Training Facility in Ankeny.

The Evening Tribune, the afternoon sister paper of the Des Moines Register, reports on Nov. 5, 1917, that Iowan Merle Hay is among the first U.S. soldiers to be killed in World War I. The 20-year-old farm mechanic and store clerk from Glidden may have been the first to die as German troops mounted an attack on his unit's trench in France. Hay's funeral in Glidden drew mourners from around the country, and in Des Moines, he became the namesake of a major thoroughfare.
