    Francis dives for Wings, Breck/Blake sets record

    The Class A and AA boys swimming and diving state championships took place last week at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center in Minneapolis, with Armstrong/Cooper and Osseo/Maranatha taking part in the Class AA meet, while Breck/Blake won a historic championship in Class A.

    Armstrong/Cooper

    Diver Will Francis was Armstrong/Cooper’s one participant in the MSHSL boys Class AA state championships, taking part in the diving preliminary round.

    Francis earned a score of 148.90, placing in 21st place. The result concluded’s Francis 2023/24 season, which included a statement performance in sections, finishing first in diving with a personal-best score.

    The day’s results also concluded the debut season of the Armstrong/Cooper boys swimming and diving co-op team. Under the guidance of former Cooper head coach Jayson Valek and assistant and diving coach Craig Croaston, the Wings conclude their first co-op season with a taste of state appearances to come.

    Breck/Blake

    Breck/Blake boys swimming and diving took on the MSHSL Class A state meet last week at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center on the University of Minnesota campus. The co-op program, reigning champions, arrived at the MSHSL Class A meet looking to make history with an eighth consecutive team championship and break its tie with Rochester for the current record of seven straight championships. Rochester’s record was made from 1953-59.

    Breck/Blake did break that record, clinching the championship in a dominant series of performances, earning 408 points, double that of second place St. Thomas Academy.

    Notable performances included first-place finishes in both the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard individual medley for Charlie Egeland, with times of 53.84 and 1:48.08 respectively.

    Jack Schurtz-Ford earned first in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 44.85, while Henry Webb earned first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:38.14 and second in the 100-yard freestyle.

    Schurtz-Ford also earned first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 49.78.

    The Breck relay teams won first in three relay competitions. They timed at 3:02.58 in the 400-yard free relay, 1:32.45 in the 200-yard medley relay and 1:25.27 in the 200-yard free relay.

    Osseo/Maranatha

    The Osseo/Maranatha Christian Academy co-op featured multiple swimmers at the Class AA state championships. Mason Krings finished 15th in the 100-yard breaststroke finals with a time of 59.96.

    Alex Kosel earned 16th in the 500-yard freestyle finals with a time of 4:50.74, while the relay team finished 15th in both the 400-yard free relay and the 200-yard medley relay.
