    Twin Cities weekend guide: Jazz festival, Back to the '50s, "Sonic" rave

    Break out the lassos and cowboy boots: Minnesota's oldest rodeo is back.

    What's happening: The Buffalo PRCA Championship Rodeo , around an hour northwest of the Twin Cities, returns for its 70th year starting Thursday with three evenings of family-friendly cowboy and cowgirl entertainment.


    Zoom in: The show kicks off with a grand entry led by flag girls and rodeo queens before barrel racers, bucking horses and bulls, steer wrestlers and more take to the arena.

    • Gates open at 5pm and performances start at 7pm Thursday–Saturday. Open rain or shine. General admission tickets are $25 for ages 13 and up, $20 ages 12 and under.

    In more entertainment news...

    🎷 The Twin Cities Jazz Festival kicks off Friday afternoon for two days of live jazz concentrated at St. Paul parks, restaurants and venues. Many of the locations are within walking distance of each other, and all shows Friday and Saturday are free.

    🕹️ Video game-themed raves continue Friday night at Boom Island Brewing in Minnetonka. This edition: " A Night of Remixes & EDM from 'Sonic the Hedgehog'" with three DJs and a high score competition. $10

    🪩 Juneteenth Jubilee , a celebration of "liberation and freedom for Black and brown bodies and identities in burlesque," is Friday night at Lush Theater in Minneapolis. Stick around for the dance party after the show. $30

    🚗 It's "Back to the '50s" weekend at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. The Minnesota Street Rod Association's annual car show Friday–Sunday will feature thousands of hot rods, classics, customs and restored vehicles all from 1964 or earlier. $15 at the door, cash only. Kids under 15 get in free with a paid adult.

    🐟 Got a passion for koi fish? The Upper Midwest's premier koi show is Friday–Sunday in St. Louis Park's Rec Center, featuring plenty of fish on display, vendors selling domestic and imported Japanese koi, a raffle, auction and experienced Koi Club members to answer your questions. Free
