Minnesota Vikings 90-man roster: Can Jaren Hall make the roster after the selection of J.J. McCarthy?

The Minnesota Vikings are firmly entrenched in OTAs and are progressing toward training camp at TCO Performance Center. This will be the third season under head coach Kevin O'Connell and general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah while also being a turning point in the future of the organization.

To prepare for the pivotal 2024 season, we will break down each player on the 90-man roster leading up to training camp. In this series, we will look into their background, scheme fit, best and worst case scenario along with what to expect from each player. It will also help gain more insight on each player going into the year, especially with players who haven't gotten much fanfare.

Does J.J. McCarthy spell the end of Jaren Hall's Vikings career?

Background

Hall was a three-star recruit in the 2016 recruiting class and committed to BYU out of high school. Before attending BYU, Hall served a two-year Mormon mission and arrived on campus in 2018. He spent some time on the BYU baseball team before becoming the starting quarterback to begin the 2021 season. He was successful for the Cougars over both of his seasons running the offense but he couldn't quite get them over the top. Hall was then selected in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft by the Vikings and he started two games with unfortunate results. He suffered a concussion in his first start and was pulled at halftime in his second start where he looked like a fish out of water on Sunday Night Football.

Scheme fit

Hall fits perfectly into head coach Kevin O'Connell's scheme with his arm talent and mobility. He thrived in that scheme during his time at BYU and it was a natural transition from college to the NFL.

Best case scenario

Even though Hall isn't going to be viewed as the future at quarterback moving forward, he can still be a valuable asset on the roster. Hall comes out in training camp and the preseason thriving in his second year. He slings it consistently during the three preseason games and proves that Nick Mullens is expendable and keeps his roster spot.

Worst case scenario

Hall's struggles in his second start continue to percolate and he fails to move from being fourth on the depth chart. He fails to show any development, making it easy for the Vikings to move on from him and he ends up on the practice squad.

What to expect in 2024

Hall had the world in his hands, something that most fifth-round picks at quarterback don't ever get. Now, it stinks that he got hurt during the second drive of his first start because he looked to be building up to something. Ultimately, that's the nature of the game and he was a fifth-round pick for a reason.

The likely scenario is that Hall ends up being waived and snuck onto the practice squad. If he does have a great training camp and preseason, watch for the Vikings to try and move Mullens for a day three pick in the same way they acquired him in 2023. Having your third quarterback on a rookie contract is valuable and Mullens won't be that inexpensive in 2025 if you want to re-sign him.
