NFL insider believes Sunday Ticket lawsuit could add game to Minnesota Vikings schedule

The Minnesota Vikings were potentially given a $450 million due to the NFL Sunday Ticket trial on Thursday afternoon. There will be multiple appeals before a dime gets paid but it's a significant amount of money.

What are the ripple effects of that trial? It is going to force the NFL to find ways to make more money. Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio isn't just the founder of the site, he's a former lawyer. That viewpoint is great to have in a situation like this when the battle is being waged in the courtroom.

Florio believes that this court decision could expedite the 18th game on the NFL season.

It doesn’t take a crystal ball to know that the NFL wants to expand the regular season to 18 games. It also doesn’t require psychic powers to know that the league needs to be ready to potentially write a check for $14.088 billion (plus prejudgment interest, post-judgment interest, and attorneys’ fees) after all appeals are exhausted.

It will take roughly three years to get there, maybe four. In the interim, why not accelerate the inevitable?

The NFL has been serious about expanding to 18 games and this could finally be what makes that happen. They expanded to 17 games for the 2021 season while shrinking to three preseason games. The discussion is going to be interesting, especially since the CBA is ratified through 2031.

The NFL could push to get the 18th game done before that expires, something that Florio reported on April 30th, 2024 . This could be a really big deal for the Vikings and every NFL team. An extra game mean more wear and tear along with higher chance of injuries. It could also mean that the league adds an extra bye week. Whatever the changes are, it will be a big impact on the Vikings.
