Twins Division Rival Among Many Teams Calling on Red-Hot Matt Wallner

The Minnesota Twins are in San Francisco to face the Giants tonight. It’s the first game of their final three game series, before the MLB All-Star break. Matt Wallner won’t be participating, obviously, but he’s sure been producing like an All-Star recently.

Matt Wallner is absolutely crushing baseballs right now

In 4 games since his call-up, Wallner is batting .546 (6-for-11), with 3 RBI, 2 HR and a 1.825 OPS. Small sample size, right? Prior to that, Matt was batting .342 with 29 RBI and 12 homers since June 1 at Triple A. Clearly, his hot streak is not bound by class.

This is exactly what the Minnesota Twins were waiting for, when it comes to the 27-year-old Wallner. But, is his recent success sustainable? That is the question coaching and front office executives must figure out.

Because this roster needs pitching help before the MLB trade deadline . At least, if they want to be a World Series contender. And good starting pitching help doesn’t come free. Thus, Wallner has been one of the top trade pieces they have been dangling in recent weeks. Now is is an ideal time to sell high on the Forest Lake, MN kid. Especially if you don’t see him as the right fit long-term.

t might be difficult to remember now, but the same Matt Wallner you just read about was sent down to the minors in April because he had a batting average under .100. Prior to the hot streak he started in June, the Twins couldn’t have traded Wallner for a bucket of game balls.

According to Darren Wolfson (SKOR North, KSTP) , that’s not the case anymore. Since trade talks have heated up this month, Minnesota has gotten a lot of calls on Matt Wallner, and those have only continued to come in, as his hot streak has gone big league.

“The Twins are still getting calls on Matt Wallner, like the Royals and Mariners. But hey, we’ve seen it the last week week. That man never needs to go back to the minors. Please, uncle mercy Twins. When Royce Lewis is ready to go here July 20-23, please don’t send Matt Wallner back to the minors. He is a big league player. Yes, there is going to be swing and miss. But if I’m the Twins, Matt Wallner is in my lineup for the foreseeable future, but I’m just telling you they continue to get a lot of trade calls on him.”

Will the Minnesota Twins trade one of the hottest hitters in their lineup? That’s not a question we should be worried about asking. The only reason this team needs to float Wallner, or any of their top prospects at the trade deadline, is because they refused to pay Sonny Gray during the offseason.

Had they paid Gray, they’d not only have one of the best batting lineups in baseball, but one of the best pitching rotations too. Instead, they’ll have to hope there’s a team out there willing to bite on Wallner, or even the hotter hitting Jose Miranda. If we assume Brooks Lee is untouchable, those two are their most likely path to a legitimate starting pitcher for the front of their rotation.
