Minneapolis PD investigating string of violent incidents that has left 3 dead, 7 wounded

The Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) is undertaking a large operation aimed at curbing violence following a deadly weekend in the city, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries.

According to an MPD news release, a "stretch of violent days" starting Thursday saw 10 apparently unrelated incidents that produced three homicides — with two men fatally shot and another man stabbed to death — and at least seven people wounded by gunfire.

The release says the surge in violence prompted an "emergency MPD command staff meeting," with multiple outside law enforcement agencies in attendance — the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), Hennepin County sheriffs and the FBI among them.

“I’m deeply grateful to our law enforcement and community partners who have stepped up on a moment’s notice to help us try to track down those responsible for these heinous acts and to help us put an end to the violence,” said MPD Chief Brian O’Hara.

O’Hara added that the department is also working with community groups, including violence interrupters , who "will be working the streets tonight" in order to prevent further incidents.

Here's an overview of the 10 incidents in question:

    Thursday, July 25

Shooting: At around 1:30 a.m., an adult male sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound while sitting in his car near 24th St. E. and Bloomington Ave. S.

Shooting: Also around 1:30 a.m., a person riding a motorcycle was shot by suspects believed to have fired from a vehicle. His wounds were described as life-threatening.

Shooting: Around 12:00 a.m. the following night, a man was walking outside on the 3200 block of Penn Ave N. when shots were fired; he received a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

    Friday, July 26

Shooting, carjacking: A man was in a vehicle on the 200 block of Oak Grove Street early in the morning when a suspect "removed him from the vehicle" and stole it; in the process of the auto theft, shots were fired, and the man was struck. His injuries were described as life-threatening. The vehicle was later located by St. Paul police, who arrested an adult male suspect.

    Saturday, July 27

Shooting homicide: A 20-year-old man was shot outside a property on the 2600 Block of 3rd Ave S. around 7:13 p.m.; he was taken to Hennepin Healthcare and later pronounced dead there.

Shooting: About 10 minutes later, officers were dispatched to a shooting on the 2600 Block of Cedar Ave S., where they found a man with potentially life-threatening gunshot wounds. Preliminary information indicates the victim was walking down the street with a group when shots rang out.

Shooting: Around 9:08 p.m., officers from the 4th Precinct on the city's north side responded to a shooting and found an adult male with "apparent non-life-threatening gunshot wounds." Police believe it was the result of an altercation that escalated to gunfire; the shooter left the scene before officers arrived.

    Sunday, July 28

Shooting: Around 12:37 a.m., a stolen vehicle with apparent gunfire damage crashed near 16th Ave. N. and Penn Ave. N. Though the vehicle was unoccupied when officers arrived, an 18-year-old with apparently nonfatal gunshot wounds was dropped off at North Memorial Health.

Shooting homicide: Near the 3200 Block of Penn Av N around 1:37 a.m., officers responded to a ShotSpotter activation and found a 45-year-old man with gunshot wounds lying on the sidewalk near Lowry Ave. N. and Penn Ave. N. He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Stabbing homicide: Around 3:15 a.m., officers found a 31-year-old man with multiple stab wounds inside a residence on the 3400 block of Penn Ave N. Despite all lifesaving efforts, he was later pronounced dead at North Memorial Healthcare. Police believe the stabbing was the result of an altercation at a party.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner will release the names of the three homicide victims in the coming days.
