Many Black immigrants come to Minnesota with ambitions and talents that feed into entrepreneurship. They want to be their own boss; they want to create wealth for their family and build a community asset. But many encounter distinct challenges along the way.

That’s why Sahan Journal is bringing together a panel of Black entrepreneurs who are making it in Minnesota. On May 30 at 6 p.m., Sahan’s founder and CEO Mukhtar M. Ibrahim and reporter Alfonzo Galvan will moderate a community conversation exploring how Black immigrants can overcome challenges to become bosses in Minnesota.

    Together, we will:

    • Discuss their successes and challenges.
    • Explore what it’s like to be a boss.
    • Learn about the values that drive their professional goals.
    • Explore the economic and cultural climate for Black entrepreneurs in Minnesota.
    • Assess the resources available for business owners.
    • Advise aspiring entrepreneurs on what they need to know to succeed.

    Here are the panelists:

    • Beatrice Adenodi, interim director of economic and community development at ACER
    • David Manly , founder and CEO of the tech startup Juduh
    • Modoh Wanda, CEO of African Fashion Week Minnesota
    • Dr. Stephen Menya, co-owner of Lions Gym and Wellness Center
    • Tomme Beevas, founder and chief strategic officer of Pimento Jamaican Kitchen

At the event, audience members will also have the opportunity to directly engage with leaders of  Black businesses in Minnesota.

Join us for the live community conversation at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 30, in Capri Theater’s Paradise Community Hall, located at 2027 W. Broadway, in Minneapolis.

This event is free and open to the public. All community members are encouraged to attend. Registration is strongly encouraged. Learn more and register here .
