Last season the Minnesota Timberwolves took the NBA by storm and became appointment viewing. Anthony Edwards has trended towards becoming the face of the league. Chris Finch is out to push his team further in the year ahead, and the early award predictions seem to suggest it will happen.

An MVP for the Minnesota Timberwolves?

The Minnesota Timberwolves have had just one player win an MVP award in franchise history. Kevin Garnett accomplished the feat following the 2003-04 season. The Hall of Famer averaged 24.2 points per game and led the league with a career-best 13.9 rebounds per game. The drought could be over in the year ahead though.

A poll of ESPN staff writers tabbed superstar Anthony Edwards as fourth in the NBA MVP race. The full breakdown is loaded.

    1. Luka Doncic Dallas Mavericks 61 points (48% of 1st place votes)
    2. Nikola Jokic Denver Nuggets 40 points (10%)
    3. Shai GIlgeous-Alexander Oklahoma City Thunder 37 points (24%)
    4. Anthony Edwards Minnesota Timberwolves 15 points (5%)
    5. Giannis Antetokounmpo Milwaukee Bucks 13 points (5%)
    6. Joel Embid Philadelphia 76ers 8 points (5%)
    7. Jayson Tatum Boston Celtics 5 points (5%)
    8. Anthony Davis Los Angeles Lakers 3 points
    9. Ja Morant Memphis Grizzlies 2 points
    10. Kevin Durant Phoenix Suns 1 point

Edwards finished seventh in the MVP voting a season ago. He is just 23 years old , and is coming off invaluable experience with Team USA during the Olympics. If he is able to parlay that success into the regular season, his ascent in the league could be unmatched.

The Timberwolves have a solid big three with Karl-Anthony Towns and Rudy Gobert joining Edwards. Pushing each other to new heights in the season ahead is a must.

Not just MVP consideration for the Minnesota Timberwolves

Of course an MVP award is the pinnacle individual achievement for the NBA . The Minnesota Timberwolves have talent that factors in other places as well. Up against the salary cap, Minnesota couldn’t afford to make sweeping changes this offseason.

They did add rookie guard Rob Dillingham, and he should make an impact right away. The 8th overall pick from Kentucky checked in fifth for Rookie of the Year honors. He trails just Reed Sheppard, Zach Edey, Donovan Clingan, and Stephon Castle.

Rudy Gobert has racked up multiple Defensive Player of the Year awards . Another may be coming this season, and he was voted second, behind only fellow countryman Victor Wembanyama. Reigning Sixth Man of the Year Naz Reid came in third to repeat . He trails only Malik Monk and Alex Caruso. Although both players received more points, Reid’s 19% of first place votes was even with the pair.
