Lake Conference rivals Wayzata and Minnetonka placed second and third, respectively, in state Class AAA girls golf last week at Bunker Hills in Coon Rapids.

Wayzata went into the second day of the tourney, June 12, with a good chance to be the champion. The Trojans had a team score of 306 the first day, just one shot behind Maple Grove. Minnetonka was 20 strokes behind Wayzata and 21 behind Maple Grove, so the Skippers became more of a longshot.

As the second day unfolded, Maple Grove stayed hot and Wayzata tailed off. In the end, the Crimson had a two-day score of 611 to 626 for Wayzata. Minnetonka maintained its third place standing with a final score of 650.

The highest finisher among Lake Conference girls, senior Saachi Deshmukh of Wayzata, finished fifth overall with rounds of 71 and 77 to repeat as an All-State golfer. St. Michael-Albertville golfer Abigail Labrador tied for ninth place with 76-75-151. Sophomore Lauren Chambs of Wayzata made All-State with 74-79-153.

Ninth-grader Mila Sloan of Minnetonka emerged as her school’s top player with 83-76-159 for 20th place.

Senior Kiersten Lawrence, a Miss Golf of Minnesota candidate along with Wayzata teammate Deshmukh, finished 25th at state with 79-82-161. A stroke behind her was Minnetonka sophomore Selena Wu with 78-84-162. Another Minnetonka sophomore Ruby Reding, followed with 82-81-163.

Edina’s top finisher in the tournament, sophomore Emmy Inderieden had scores of 78-86-154 to tie Wayzata junior Jenna Britz 82-82-164.

Minnetonka ninth-grader Kieley Hanson shot 83-83-166.

The next finisher from Edina, sophomore Stella Bodensteiner, finished at 89-79-168.

Edina’s other state qualifier was senior Caroline Cultu.

Completing Minnetonka’s tournament lineup were sophomore Reagan McCarthy and ninth-grader Ananda Nhouyvanisvong. Eighth-grader Reese Barry and senior Anna Nowinski played for Wayzata.
