'Teach-in' on peace in light of Israel-Hamas war

MISHAWAKA — There will be a “teach-in” on peace in light of the war between Israel and Hamas from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 20 in the St. Bavo Parish Center, 502 W. Seventh St.

Gus Zuehlke, who is St. Bavo’s director of faith formation, is coordinating the event, which will feature sessions with pre-recorded videos and possibly some live speakers. It will include a video from 2017 of the Rev. Antonio Spadero speaking at the University of Notre Dame about Pope Francis’ geopolitics and diplomacy.

Participants don’t need to stay for the whole day. Reservations are requested by 4 p.m. July 18 to organize seating and lunch, which will be provided for free by Wholesome Package. Contact Zuehlke at gusaz@aol.com or 574-255-1437.

“We especially want to welcome to this dialogue representatives from non-Catholic Christian, Muslim, and Jewish religions,” Zuehlke said. He said the discussion doesn’t “claim to represent all voices from these traditions,” though it features aspects of them that “focus on working toward peaceful resolutions to pressing global conflicts.”

He continues to host a weekly prayer for peace from 9 to 10 a.m. each Saturday at the Central Park main stage in Mishawaka.
