Cadillac holds off Traverse City West in regional semifinal win
GAYLORD— The Cadillac Vikings tipped off against the Traverse City West Titans in Gaylord on Tuesday night in a regional 1 semifinal matchup. The Vikings topped the Titans 59-52. The Titans finish their season with a 19-6 overall record. Cadillac (23-2) will move on to the Regional 1 final on Thursday against (22-2) Muskegon.
McBain beats Ithaca to move onto regional final
HOUGHTON LAKE - The McBain Ramblers beat the Ithaca Yellowjackets 81-32 to advance to the regional final. The Ramblers had a 19-point lead at the half and exploded in the 2nd to get the big win. Every player on Mcbain’s roster got in the score book, with Clayton Heuker putting up a game-high 15 points and Claydon Ingleright putting in 14. The Ramblers will face Sanford Meridian on Thursday at 7 for a spot in the state quarterfinals.
Sanford Meridian tops Beal City, advances to regional final
HOUGHTON LAKE - The Sanford Meridian Mustangs are heading to the regional final after beating Beal City 62-42. The Mustangs were led by Nick Metzger with 23 points and Sawyer Moloy added 21. For Beal City, Joshua Wilson had a team-high 11 points. Sanford Meridian will play McBain on Thursday in the regional final; Beal City’s season comes to an end with a 20-5 record and a district title.
Cheboygan beats Kalkaska for second straight time, advances to district semis
PETOSKEY - Four nights after defeating Kalkaska to close out their regular season schedule, the Cheboygan Chiefs opened up their postseason with another win over the Blazers on Monday night, 38-30. The Chiefs had a balanced scoring attack, with seven different players getting into the scorebook, with no players topping 10 points. Jaelyn Wheelock and Bella Ecker led Cheboygan with nine points apiece. Kalkaska got an 11-point night from Lucy Hall. Cheboygan (11-12) have won four of their last six contests, and they will advance to face Kingsley in a district semifinal at Petoskey High School on Wednesday night at 7:00.
Boyne City ousts Grayling in district opener
PETOSKEY - After losing both regular season matchups in Lake Michigan Conference play, the Boyne City Ramblers got their revenge in the opening round of district play, eliminating Grayling 49-34 on Monday evening. The Vikings started fast, taking a 17-12 lead after one quarter of play, but the Ramblers turned that around in the second quarter, taking a 25-23 lead into the locker room at halftime. Braydin Noble scored ten of her team-high 14 points in the second half to lead the Ramblers to the win. Teammate Addison Burns chipped in with 13 for Boyne City. Makayla Watkins led Grayling with 11 points. Boyne City (10-13) draws host Petoskey in a district semifinal matchup on Wednesday night at 5:30.
Harbor Light Christian opens up districts with win over Pellston
HARBOR SPRINGS — The Harbor Light Christian Swordsmen got scoring from eight different players as they toppled Pellston 43-24 on Monday night in the opening round of division four district play. The Swordsmen jumped out to a 26-12 lead at the half, and built on that lead in the second half on the way to their 10th win of the season. Valerie Maghakian led the Swordsmen with 13 points. Pellston’s Breanna Willis led the Hornets in scoring with 13 points as well. Harbor Light Christian (10-12) advances to face Mackinaw City in a district semifinal at Mackinaw City on Wednesday night at 6 p.m.
Seven local wrestlers win individual state championships over the weekend
DETROIT - A total of 63 wrestlers representing thirty local schools earned all-state honors at this past weekend’s MHSAA Individual State Wrestling Championships held at Ford Field in Detroit. Seven local athletes (five boys and two girls) took home state championships in their various weight classes and divisions. Another six wrestlers finished at state runners-up. The individual state champions were Natalie Gibson from Chippewa Hills (105 lbs.) and Sunni LaFond from Gaylord (115 lbs.) on the girls side. Caitlin Clark breaks Pete Maravich’s NCAA Division I scoring record
Caitlin Clark stood alone at the free-throw line on Sunday and made the foul shots that put her atop the all-time NCAA Division I scoring chart. The flash and pizzazz of her game have made her the biggest name in all of college basketball. Yet it was two free throws after a technical foul that pushed Clark past the late Pete Maravich’s 54-year-old record in No. 6 Iowa’s 93-83 win over No. 2 Ohio State. Clark entered the game in Iowa City needing 18 points to pass Maravich’s total of 3,667, amassed in just 83 games over three seasons at LSU (1967-70). She finished with 35 to run her total to 3,685 in 130 games. Maravich’s mark fell four days after Clark broke Lynette Woodard’s major college women’s record when she scored 33 points against Minnesota on Wednesday.
The Bay Reps are heading to the state semifinals, beating Alpena 5-1
GAYLORD - The Bay Reps beat the Alpena Wildcats 5-1 in the state quarterfinal. The game was tied 0-0 after the first period, but came alive in the 2nd, with the Bay Reps scoring twice. Alpena scored the first goal of the 3rd period, but the Bay Reps scored 3 unanswered to get the win. Chase Lucas had a hattrick, while Joel Ziecina and Edward Walter each had a goal for the bay reps. “It feels great, you know, me and the other seniors and some juniors have been working for this for three years and finally be here in our final year is awesome.” Said Grant Lucas. The Bay Reps will play their semifinal game on March 8th.
Mio’s Freshman phenom Mia McGregor has her sights set on more than just points
MIO - The Mio Thunderbolts are set for years to come with freshman Mia McGregor leading the bolts into districts. McGregor is the daughter of two previous standouts at Mio, Kristi McGregor, who was a part of the Mio team to make it to the final four, and her father, Ty who was an all-state player for Mio when they won a state title going 28-0. Buckley beats Mackinac Island, as the Lakers make the long trip downstate
BUCKLEY - The Buckley Bears beat the Mackinac Island Lakers 52-23 as both teams wrapped up their regular seasons on Thursday night. For the Lakers this was their most southern trip for a game that the school’s athletic director, Christina Alexander had experienced. “We actually took one of the ferry boats through the straits of Mackinac to St. Ignace, and then our school bus picked us up in St. Ignace and we took our school bus down here to Buckley.” Said Alexander. ”We left the island at about 2:00 today. Got to Buckley at 6:30. We did have a stop for dinner. We did stop at Chick-Fil-A on the way. It’s a special treat for the girls.” Mackinac Island will begin their district matchup against Petoskey St. Micheal, while Buckley will take on Mesick.
Sault Ste. Marie beats Kingsley in District Semifinal
KINGSLEY - The Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils took down the Kingsley Stags 36-29 to advance to the district final against Boyne City on Friday night. The Blue Devils trailed at halftime but came back in the third quarter to propel them to the win. Sault Ste. Marie will take on Boyne City on Friday at Sault Ste. Marie, while Kingsley’s season comes to an end with a 11-12 record.
Sault Ste. Marie win Regional Title, beating Marquette
SAULT STE. MARIE - The Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils beat the Marquette Redmen 3-0 in the regional championship game, to advance to the state quarterfinal against Houghton. The Blue Devils led 1-0 heading into the third period and scored two goals in the third to seal the win. The Blue Devils game against Houghton is scheduled for March 2nd at 1 P.M.
Basketball star Caitlin Clark to leave Iowa for the WNBA
Women’s college basketball superstar Caitlin Clark announced Thursday that she will leave Iowa and enter the 2024 WNBA draft. Clark, a senior who’s been the most-talked about college player - men or women - this season, has one more year of eligibility left at Iowa because of COVID rules. Mancelona 8-year-old buys new pony by returning pop cans
ELLSWORTH — Mancelona 8-year-old Skyleigh Hoose lost her longtime family horse, Mel, to an incurable degenerative muscle disease last fall. After losing Mel, she was determined to buy another horse of her own. So she decided she would start collecting and returning pop cans and bottles. “I wanted her to learn that she just doesn’t get things handed down to her,” said Skyleigh’s mother, Andrea Hoose. “So one day we were returning pop cans and she said, ‘Well, I can just return cans to get my new pony,’ and I told her we could try that, and it’s just exploded from there.” Skyleigh made $1,000 in bottle returns to purchase her new pony, Jewels. She is continuing to collect bottles and cans to fund her lessons at Circle M Acres and for tack and feed for Jewels. She’s raised over $2,000 total thus far.
Alpena eliminates Gladwin in regional final
SAGINAW - The Alpena Wildcats jumped out to a quick start, with a 4-0 first period lead, on their way to an 8-3 division three hockey regional final victory over Gladwin. Gladwin sees their season come a close with a 19-5-1 overall record. Alpena (17-9) will take on the Bay Reps at the Otsego County Sportsplex in Gaylord on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
Traverse City Central falls in tightly-contested regional final to Midland
MIDLAND - The Traverse City Central Trojans could not quite dig themselves out of an early hole, as they fell to Midland in a division two hockey regional final 4-3 on Wednesday evening. The Trojans trailed by three goals midway through the second period when Arthur McManus got them on the board. The Chemics would respond to push the lead back to three goals at 4-1 at the end of the second period. Traverse City Central would net a pair of third period goals to pull within one with less than a minute to play, but they were unable to complete the comeback to force overtime.
