Fremont girls come from behind to knock off Ludington in key league matchup
LUDINGTON - Jessica Bennett saved her best for when it mattered the most, scoring 14 of her 15 points in the second half, including three clutch three-pointers in the fourth quarter to help the Fremont Packers come from behind to defeat Ludington in a matchup of the last two unbeaten teams in the West Michigan - Lakes Division on Tuesday night. It was a defensive battle, with the game tied 17-17 at the half. In the third quarter, the Orioles held Fremont without a made field goal, as they were able to build a 29-23 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Fremont would battle back, with Bennett making threes on back-to-back possessions to give the Packers the lead at 34-33 midway through the frame. Ludington would re-take the lead on a pair of free throws by Elianna Jeruzal with 3:02 remaining, but those would be the last points of the game for the Orioles, as three of their key players fouled out late in the game.
Hart tops rival Shelby to remain unbeaten in conference
SHELBY - The Hart Pirates raced past Shelby for a 56-36 victory on Tuesday night. The Pirates led just 13-10 at the end of the first quarter but were able to expand that lead to 30-18 at the half. Rilyn Porter led the offensive attack for Hart, scoring 17 points on the night. Abby Hicks and Addi Hovey chipped in with 10 points apiece for the Pirates. Brylee Friedman led the way for the Tigers, netting 10 points on the night. Hart (8-2, 5-0 West Michigan - Rivers) is off until a non-conference matchup on the road at Holland Christian on Tuesday, Jan. 30. Shelby (4-6, 2-4 WM-R) travels to Ravenna on Friday.
Sault Ste. Marie sweeps Rivals vs. Cancer games against Brimley
BRIMLEY - The Rivals vs. Cancer basketball games started in 2008 between the Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils and th Brimley Bays girls and boys basketball teams. Each year, proceeds in the thousands of dollars go to different organizations in the county. Today’s proceeds will go to MyMichigan Sault’s Road to Recovery Program. The Lady Blue Devils beat the Lady Bays 50-34 while the Blue Devils beat the Bays 57-24 in the boys game.
Manton gets highland conference win against McBain
MCBAIN - The Manton Rangers beat the McBain Ramblers 45-30 in Highland Conference action on Tuesday night. Manton got out to a lead early in the game and never looked back. Manton’s Lauren Wilder had a game high 22 points, while Adria Rozeveld had a team high 11 points for the Ramblers. Manton improves to 10-2 on the season and they’ll play Evart in their next game, McBain falls to 3-5 and they’ll take on Beal City in their next game.
Cadillac's undefeated season comes to an end with loss to Whitehall
CADILLAC - The Cadillac Vikings undefeated season came to an end on Tuesday evening as they fell to the Whitehall Vikings 58-56. It was a back and forth game that came down to the final seconds. Cadillac’s Charlie Howell had a game-high 29 points in the loss. The Vikings are now 11-1 on the season and will host Dearborn Fordson on Saturday.

The Associated Press released their latest high school girls basketball state poll for the week of January 22. Fifteen local teams garnered votes across the four divisions. The top 10 teams in the Michigan Associated Press high school basketball poll, with records in parentheses. Lake Leelanau St. Mary gets big win over Gaylord St. Mary
LAKE LEELANAU - The sixth-ranked Lake Leelanau St. Mary Eagles battled hard to earn a 53-44 non-conference win over Gaylord St. Mary on Monday. The Eagles led the majority of the game, taking a 10-8 advantage after the first quarter, and a 21-15 lead at halftime. They would build their lead to as much as 10 in the second half, but the Snowbirds kept battling back, pulling within a point with about three minutes to play in the game. Kyla Barnowski led Lake Leelanau St. Mary with 19 points. Teammate Leah Flies chipped in with a dozen for the Eagles. The Snowbirds were led by Kaylee Jeffers with a 22-point effort. “At the beginning, we didn’t start as strong as we’d hoped to,” Lake Leelanau St. Mary senior Leah Fleis said. “But, as the game went on, we started getting stronger with the ball, playing together more, and just like playing as a team more. And that’s something we’ve been trying to work on.”
Roscommon beats Harrison in non-conference action
HARRISON - The Roscommon Bucks beat the Harrison Hornets 46-21 in girls’ basketball action on Monday night. The Bucks had three players score in double figures, Alexis Carper with 15, Zoey Kauffman with 12, and Kylie Traver had 10. For the Hornets Lydia Kendall had 11. The Roscommon Bucks move to 7-3 on the season, they’ll play McBain NMC in their next game. Harrison drops to 1-8 they’ll take on Beaverton in their next matchup.
Leland beats Interlochen
LELAND - The Leland Comets used a big first quarter to earn a 52-12 non-conference victory over visiting Interlochen on Monday night. The Comets jumped out to a 20-2 lead after the first eight minutes of play. Leland (7-3) travels to Kingsley on Friday night, Jan. 26
Sault Ste. Marie beats Port Huron Northern in a matchup between two ranked teams
SAULT STE. MARIE - In boys’ hockey, the #9 ranked Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils in Division 3 hosted the Huskies from Port Huron Northern Saturday afternoon. The Huskies are ranked #9 in Division 2. Before the game, a special tribute to former Blue Devil Hockey Coach Fred Devouno. He coached the 1984 and 1989 Blue Devil Hockey team to the only two State Championships for Sault Ste. Marie. A special banner was unveiled above the Blue Devil bench before the game. The Blue Devils scored first. Just over one minute into the game, Ethan Chambers blasted a shot into the back on the Huskies net.
Ferris State Women's and Men's Basketball sweeps Grand Valley on rivalry day
BIG RAPIDS - Both the Ferris State women’s and men’s basketball teams got wins over Grand Valley State on Saturday afternoon. The first matchup was the women, and Grand Valley State came in ranked number one, but Ferris State got big time performances out of Kadyn Blanchard with 26 points and Mallory McCartney had 23 points as the Bulldogs won it 71-65. It was the second time this season that Ferris State women knocked off the number one team, as they beat Ashland earlier this season. The Bulldogs are currently ranked as the number 12 team in the country. On them men’s side, The Bulldogs got off to a slow start, but had four players score in double figures as they got the win 86-73. Ethan Erickson led the way with 18, DeSean Munson had 17, Dolapo Olayinka with 14, and Ben Davidson with 12. The Bulldogs were ranked 14 going into that matchup, and they’ll take on Wayne State in their next game.

Sports Overtime was all over the map on Friday night, catching action in boys and girls basketball, high school hockey, college hockey and men’s college basketball. Here’s a rundown of what we saw: GIRLS BASKETBALL: Central Montcalm at Big Rapids The Big Rapids Cardinals beat the Central Montcalm 55 to 48 in Central State Activities Association action. The Cardinals were led by Cailin Knoop who dropped a game high 25 points.
Sports Illustrated plans to lay off many, if not all staff after brand name license was revoked
The publisher of Sports Illustrated has notified employees it is planning to lay off a significant portion — possibly all — of the outlet’s staff after its license to use the iconic brand’s name in print and digital was revoked. In an email to employees Friday morning, the Arena Group, which operates Sports Illustrated and related properties, said that Authentic Brands Group has revoked its marketing license. “As a result of this license revocation, we will be laying off staff that work on the SI brand,” the email said. Sports Illustrated’s employee union said in a statement that the layoffs would be a significant number and possibly all, of the NewsGuild workers represented.
Eminem, Barry Sanders and Lions fans everywhere finally get a chance to cheer for a winner
DETROIT (AP) — Eminem stood alongside Pro Football Hall of Famers Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson before the Detroit Lions hosted their first home playoff game in three decades, soaking up an electric atmosphere at Ford Field. “The energy in the building was amazing,” Johnson said in a telephone interview, taking a break from snowboarding in Utah. “You could feel it. I wish we could’ve had that kind of experience.” He’s not alone. Detroit was an NFL powerhouse a long time ago, winning three league titles from 1952 to 1957 in the pre-Super Bowl era, and the franchise had only one postseason win and that was with Sanders in the backfield 32 years ago and didn’t have success after the regular season with Johnson catching passes from Matthew Stafford.
Traverse City West hockey tops Saline to start busy weekend
TRAVERSE CITY - Brandon Meyers posted a goal and two assists to help lead the Traverse City West Titans to a 3-2 non-conference win over visiting Saline on Thursday night. The game was tied 1-1 through two periods of play before the Titans struck for a pair of goals just 12 second apart in the middle of the third period to take a lead that they would not relinquish. Saline scored the first goal of the game midway through the first period. Traverse City West responded with just 0:21 left in the period when Jonah Starr poked in a loose puck at side of the net to tie the game up at one. Harrison Heller would break the tie in the third period off of an assist from Meyers, and Meyers would then light the lamp a few seconds later. Saline got a late third period goal, but could not get a tying goal past West’s Alonso Ovaitt, who earned the win in net.
Rudyard posts commanding victory over Engadine
RUDYARD - The Rudyard Bulldogs cruised to a 78-12 Eastern U.P. Conference victory over Engadine on Thursday night. For the Bulldogs, it was their fifth win in their last seven contests, and it keeps them solidly in second place in the conference behind Pickford. Rudyard (7-3, 4-1 EUP) heads west to take on defending state champion Munising on Wednesday night.
