QB Aidan Chiles following coach Jonathan Smith to Michigan State
Former Oregon State quarterback Aidan Chiles announced Thursday he is following coach Jonathan Smith to Michigan State as a transfer. Chiles hade his commitment to Michigan State public in a social media post. He played in nine games this season as a freshman backup to DJ Uiagalelei. The former four-star recruit from California threw for 309 yards and four touchdowns and ran for three scores, getting steady work as a change-of-pace player for the 21st-ranked Beavers (8-4). Smith left Oregon State to become the head coach at Michigan State on Nov. 25.
Ferris State Hockey team get ready for final game before Christmas Break
BIG RAPIDS - The first half of the Ferris State hockey season is coming to a close after their game against Lake Superior State on Saturday. The Bulldogs currently have an 5-10-1 record. Shepherd comes from behind to defeat Clare and remain unbeaten
SHEPHERD - The Shepherd Blue Jays shook off a slow start on Wednesday night to score a 47-36 Jack Pine Conference win over Clare. The Pioneers jumped out to a 13-5 midway through the first quarter, but the Blue Jays were able to close that gap to 15-10 after the end of eight minutes of play. Shepherd (5-0, 3-0 Jack Pine) travels to Sanford Meridian to take on the other remaining Jack Pine Conference unbeaten team on Friday night. Clare (3-2, 1-2 Jack Pine) will also be on the road on Friday night, Dec. 15, taking on Gladwin.
Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart blitzes Merrill to stay undefeated in Mid-State play
MOUNT PLEASANT - The Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart Irish posted an impressive 69-31 win over visiting Merrill on Wednesday night. The Irish were led by Noah Zeien with 18 points and Grady Pieratt with 14, as 10 different players scored in the contest. Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart out-scored the Vandals 45-15 over the middle two quarters, holding a 38-15 lead at the half, and a 58-22 edge through three quarters. The Irish (3-1, 3-0 Mid-State) will host Vestaburg on Friday, Dec. 15 in a matchup of the final two unbeaten teams in Mid-State Conference play.
Manton beats Evart to move to 2-1 on the season
EVART - The Manton Rangers beat the Evart Wildcats in tightly contested Highland Conference matchup, winning 55-50. Manton had a 27-18 lead at halftime and was able to hold on for the victory. Jackson Schab led Manton in scoring with 17 points and Lincoln Hicks chipped in with 14. For Evart they were led in scoring by Noah Vanderlinde who had 19 points and Aidan Anderon dropped in 12. Manton moves to 2-1 on the year, and will take on McBain Northern Michigan Christian in their next game. Evart falls to 2-3 and will play LeRoy Pine River in their next matchup.

MOUNT PLEASANT — Central Michigan’s Alina Anderson will be finding herself on the court practically all-year long. Shortly after the Chippewas volleyball season wrapped, Anderson decided she would be joining the women’s basketball squad, just a few weeks into their 2023-24 season. “It was kind of a hard transition, mentally, it was a lot to think about. And to think that when volleyball starts up I’m going to be doing both. But I knew that this was something that I love,” Anderson said. The offer to join the women’s basketball team came at the perfect time.
Marion girls’ basketball beats Walkerville in home opener
MARION - The Marion Eagles girls basketball team beat the Walkerville Wildcats 41-21 in their home opener on Tuesday night. Madison Bell had a game high 14 points, with Jacelyn Moggo and Mara Joly both adding 8 points. For Walkerville, Maria Rodriguez led the team with 10 points. Marion moves to 2-1 on the year and they’ll take on Pentwater in their next game, Walkerville falls to 1-3 and they’ll take on Baldwin in their next game.
Beaverton girls basketball remains unbeaten, taking down Farwell
FARWELL - The Beaverton Beavers beat the Farwell Eagles in Jack Pine Conference play on Tuesday night, 48-34. The Beavers were led in scoring by freshman Myah Hubble who had 27 points, and Bryar pollard added 12 points. For the Eagles they were led by Haiden Cassiday and Tahlia Bell, who both scored 9 points. Beaverton moves to 3-0 on the season, and they’ll look to stay unbeaten when they take on Pinconning. Farwell falls to 1-2 and they will take on Harrison in their next matchup.
Clare gets first win of girls basketball season, beating Shepherd
CLARE - The Clare Pioneers girls basketball team got their first win of the season Tuesday evening, beating the Shepherd Blue Jays 48-35. The Pioneers Kendra Fouts led all scorers with 22 points, and Kyley Wyman added 10 for the Pioneers. For the Blue Jays Madi Gates scored a team high 8 points. The Pioneers move to 1-2 and will take on Gladwin in their next game, and Shepherd fall to 2-1, they will take on Sanford Meridian in their next game.
Michigan LB Junior Colson wins Lott IMPACT Trophy
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Linebacker Junior Colson of top-ranked Michigan won the Lott IMPACT Trophy on Sunday night as the college football player who makes an impact on and off the field. The Haiti-born Colson received the 20th annual award from Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott at the Pacific Club in Newport Beach. Colson led the Wolverines with 71 tackles, 26 more than the next closest player, to go with a pair of tackles for a loss and as many quarterback hurries. He joins Jabrill Peppers in 2016 and Aidan Hutchinson in 2021 as Michigan players who have won. IMPACT stands for integrity, maturity, performance, academics, community and tenacity.
Gladwin falls to Macomb L’Anse Creuse North
MOUNT PLEASANT - In a Saturday afternoon high school hockey matchup the Macomb L’Anse Creuse North Crusaders beat the Gladwin Flying G’s 6-3, to claim the Mid-Michigan Invite Championship, it was the first loss of the season for Gladwin. It was a 1-1 game going into the 2nd period but the Crusaders pulled away in the final two periods to get the win. next up for the Flying G’s is a game against Sandusky.
Barry Sanders documentary ‘Bye Bye Barry’ sheds new light on his decision to retire from Lions
Coach Dan Campbell and quarterback Jared Goff aren’t the only popular Detroit Lions these days. A movie about the franchise’s greatest running back and his sudden retirement is Amazon Prime Video’s most-viewed documentary. “Bye Bye Barry” looks back at Barry Sanders’ 10-year career with the Detroit Lions and his decision to retire in 1999 despite being on the cusp of becoming the NFL’s all-time leading rusher. It surpassed “Kelce,” a documentary about Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce, less than two weeks after its premiere. “I think the timing is just right,” Sanders said during an interview with The Associated Press. “Amazon felt like it was a story that a lot of people wanted to hear and that they wanted to tell. They felt like it was a good story for them to be able to tell a certain way. And I think people also like documentaries like ‘The Last Dance’ where people get an in-depth look.”
McBain powers past Manton to remain unbeaten
MANTON - The McBain Ramblers put on an impressive show on Friday night, racing out to a big halftime lead, and cruising to an 80-49 win over Manton. McBain led 22-7 after the first quarter, 43-19 at the half, and 66-39 after three quarters of play. Four Ramblers scored in double figures, led by Evan Haverkamp with 18. Clayton Heuker scored 12, and Darrious Pena Perez and Aiden Koetje each tallied 10 points for McBain. Manton was led by Jackson Schab and Lincoln Hicks with 15 points apiece. Kaleb Musselman chipped in with 13 for the Rangers.
Boyne City boys basketball beats Grayling for first win of the year
GRAYLING - The Boyne City Ramblers took on the Grayling Vikings in Lake Michigan Conference action on Friday, with the Ramblers getting their first win of the season, 68-55. The Ramblers led by four at the start of the second half and used a big fourth quarter to get the win. Boyne’s Chase Stanek led all scorers with 19 points with Jaden Alger scoring 14 and Drew Neer adding 13. For Grayling Fletcher Quinlan led the way with 16 points and Ethan Kucharek added 10. Boyne City is now 1-2 on the year and their next game will be against Harbor Springs, while Grayling falls to 2-2 and will take on Charlevoix in their next matchup.
Manton girls win league opener over McBain
MANTON - The Manton girls basketball team capped an unbeaten opening week of their season with a 46-37 win over visiting McBain on Friday night. The Rangers scored the final five points of the first quarter to take a 13-8 lead after one quarter of play. Manton (2-0, 1-0 Highland) travels to Evart on Tuesday, Dec. 12. McBain (0-1, 0-1 Highland) will look to bounce back in their home opener on Monday night against Beal City.
Evart hangs on to defeat Lake City in Highland Conference battle
LAKE CITY - The Evart Wildcats nearly let a double-digit lead slip through their fingers, but they emerged from a hard-fought battle with a 42-41 win over Lake City on Friday night. The Wildcats led 29-16 at the half, and 38-26 heading into the fourth quarter. Evart (2-0, 1-0 Highland) will play host to Manton on Tuesday night, Dec. 12. Lake City (0-2, 0-1 Highland) travels to Houghton Lake on Tuesday night in search of their first win of the season.
Gaylord's girls basketball team moves to 2-0 after beating Grayling
GAYLORD - On Friday night the Gaylord Blue Devils took on the grayling Vikings in a Lake Michigan Conference versus Big North Conference Matchup with the Blue Devils winning it 51-33. Grayling had a four-point lead after the first quarter, but after that it was all Blue Devils. Gaylord’s Avery Parker led all scorers with 18 points and Karlee Pretzlaff added 10 points. For The Vikings Makayla Watkins led the way with 10 points. The Blue Devils are now 2-0 on the season and will take on Alma in their next matchup, while Grayling falls to 1-2 and will host Petoskey in their next game.
Bellaire tops Burt Lake NMCA in season opener
BELLAIRE - The Bellaire Eagles shook off a slow start to earn a 35-26 victory in their season opener at home over Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian Academy. Burt Lake took a 6-4 lead after one quarter of play, but Bellaire was able to get their offense going in the second quarter and take the lead before halftime. Bellaire (1-0) hosts Ellsworth on Wednesday, Dec. 13, while Burt Lake NMCA (0-1) will play their home opener against Boyne Falls on Friday night in the Northern Lakes League opener for both teams.
Elk Rapids moves to 2-0 with victory over Alpena
ELK RAPIDS - The Elk Rapids Elks erased an early deficit to earn a 42-22 non-conference win over visiting Alpena on Thursday evening. The Wildcats led 7-5 after a low-scoring first quarter, but the Elks’ offense got to work in the second quarter, as they out-scored Alpena 16-4 to take a 21-11 lead at halftime. In a funny coincidence, the Elks would also out-score the Wildcats 21-11 in the second half to provide the final margin. Kendall Standfest led the Elks with 16 points. Morgan Bergquist scored 12, and Hunter Shellenbarger chipped in with 10 for Elk Rapids.
