Bellaire sweeps Central Lake to earn district title
BELLAIRE - The Bellaire Eagles avenged a district loss to league rival Central Lake last year by sweeping past the Trojans on Thursday night to claim the district 105 title, 3-0. After needing five sets on Wednesday night to defeat Ellsworth, the Eagles shook off an early Trojans run in the first set to take it 25-16.
St. Ignace beats Pellston, claims district title and advances to regionals
MACKINAW CITY - The St. Ignace Saints beat the Pellston Hornets, 25-11, 25-22, 14-25, 25-12, to claim the district championship. They now advance to the regional semifinal where they will take on the Newberry Indians next Tuesday. For Pellston, there season comes to an end with a 4-12 record.
Newberry takes down Rudyard to claim district championship
PICKFORD - The Newberry Indians beat the Rudyard Bulldogs, 25-20, 28-26, 20-25, 27-25, winning it 3-1 and claiming a district title. Newberry advances to the regional semifinal and will take on St. Ignace next Tuesday at Brimley for a spot in the regional final. For Rudyard, their season comes to a close with a 19-12-3 record for the 2023 season.
McBain beats Evart to secure district title
PINE RIVER - The McBain Ramblers beat the Evart Wildcats 25-14, 25-10, 25-21, to secure a district title in division four on Thursday night. The Ramblers have now gone back-to-back years of taking a district title, they will advance to regionals and take on Beal City in the regional semifinals next Tuesday. For Evart their season comes to an end with a 6-13-1 record.
Ferris State Bulldogs hockey team gets ready to host two games against St. Lawrence
BIG RAPIDS - The Ferris State hockey team split a two-game series with Northern Michigan last weekend and on Friday and Saturday they’ll host St. Lawrence University. It’ll be the first time since 2014 that Ferris will welcome in St. Lawrence, but next year the Bulldogs will be in New York taking on the Saints. The Bulldogs come into this matchup with a 2-3-1 record while St. Lawrence sits at 1-4-1, Ferris is currently at 3rd in the CCHA standings. Rudyard and Newberry pick up district semifinal wins, will meet in district final
RUDYARD - On Wednesday evening the Rudyard Bulldogs beat the Brimley Bays, while the Newberry Indians beat the Engadine Eagles in district semifinal matchups. The Bulldogs and Indians will now play in a division four district final matchup on Thursday. For the Brimley bays, their season comes to an end with a 5-12 record, and for the Engadine Eagles they finish the season with an 0-14 record.
Leland soccer bows out in semifinals for third time in four seasons
EAST KENTWOOD - The top-ranked Muskegon Western Michigan Christian Warriors got three second half goals from Tekalegn Vlasma to knock Leland out of the MHSAA division four boys soccer tournament in a state semifinal on Wednesday night, 3-0. The Comets had the better of the play in the first half, generating a couple of quality scoring chances for Weston Burda, but he was unable to get one past Warrior keeper Daniel Minasian. “I thought we outplayed them the first half. We just couldn’t put the ball in the net,” Comet head coach Rob Sirrine said. “Their keeper made two great saves.” “That could’ve been different going into halftime with a 2-0 lead,” Sirrine said.

MOUNT PLEASANT — Jase Bauer threw for one touchdown and rushed for two more, Marion Lukes had 202 yards rushing and a score, and Central Michigan held off Northern Illinois, 37-31, on a snowy Tuesday night. Bauer gave CMU a 37-11 lead with 6:32 remaining in the third quarter. But NIU answered two plays later when Rocky Lombardi connected with Trayvon Rudolph on a 72-yard score to begin a stretch of 20 straight points. After the game, CMU head coach Jim McElwain addressed the school’s decision to investigate claims that suspended Michigan football staffer Connor Stalions was on the Chippewas’ sideline during the season opener at Michigan State. “We obviously are aware of a picture floating around with the sign-stealer guy,” McElwain said. “Our people are doing everything they can to get to the bottom of it. I certainly don’t condone it in any way, shape or form.
Traverse City St. Francis comes from behind to stun Lake City in thrilling volleyball district opener
MANTON - The Traverse City St. Francis Gladiators went the distance, erasing a two-set deficit to defeat Lake City in a thrilling district opening match 3-2 on Monday night. The Gladiators and Trojans entered the match ranked fifth and sixth, respectively, in the latest MIVCA state rankings, with St. Francis having defeated Lake City in their final match of the regular season on Thursday, Oct. 26 in four sets. On Monday night, the Gladiators jumped out to an early lead, but the Trojans were able to come back and tie things up. Both teams held leads late in the set, with Lake City pulling out a 25-23 decision in the end. The second set was another back-and-forth battle, with the Trojans scoring a 25-22 win to take a two-set lead.
Rudyard and Newberry sweep their way to district semifinals
PICKFORD - The Rudyard Bulldogs and Newberry Indians opened up division four volleyball postseason play by scoring sweeps on the floor at Pickford on Monday night. In the first match of the evening, the Bulldogs topped the host Panthers, taking the first set 25-18, the second set 25-11, and battling off a hard-fought comeback effort by Pickford to take the third set 25-23. Rudyard (18-11-3) advances to meet Brimley in a district semifinal at Pickford at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday evening. In the second half of the doubleheader at Pickford, Newberry showed consistency in sweeping Maplewood Baptist by scores of 25-19, 25-18 and 25-16.
East Jordan’s seasons ends at the hands of Ishpeming
EAST JORDAN - On Saturday afternoon at Boswell Stadium in East Jordan the Ishpeming Hematite’s beat the East Jordan Red Devils 20-6 in a district semifinal matchup. Ishpeming led this one 6-0 until the 4th quarter when Braylon Grybauskas scored a touchdown to make it 6-6. Ishpeming would go on to score two more touchdowns later in the 4th to get the victory. East Jordan’s season ends with an 8-2 record, Ishpeming will take on Iron Mountain for a district title.

In their last game Ferris State beat Michigan Tech 35-21 behind five rushing touchdowns from Carson Gulker. Fremont falls to Alma in the regional finals
BIG RAPIDS - The Fremont Packers fell 2-1 to the Alma Panthers on Thursday evening in the regional finals. Fremont fell behind 2-0 but Chaz Miller scored with about 20 minutes left to make it a 2-1 game. Caleb Vissia made some great saves throughout the game keeping the Packers in it. Fremont ends the season with a 21-2-1 record, one of their best in the school’s history.
Leland punches ticket to state semifinals with win over Harbor Springs
CLARE - The Leland Comets are heading back to the division four state semifinals, after they defeated Harbor Springs 1-0 on Thursday night to claim a regional title. Ignacio Creamer scored the game-winning goal midway through the second half, and goalie Jimmy Alpi was able to hold the Rams off of the scoreboard in the victory.

Traverse City Central closes regular season with rivalry sweep of Traverse City West
TRAVERSE CITY - The Traverse City Central Trojans wrapped up an unbeaten Big North regular season run with a three-set sweep of archrival Traverse City West on Wednesday evening. The Trojans jumped out a quick lead in the first set, scoring the first five points, but the Titans would battle back, tying the set at 7-7 and 10-10 before the Trojans again took control to finish off a 25-16 first set. The second set was by far the best of the match. Again, the Trojans grabbed an early lead, racing out to a 10-3 advantage before a TC West timeout. After the timeout, the Titans went on a run, catching and passing the Trojans, building a five-point advantage of their own. But Central regained their composure and were able to battle their way back into the set, eventually taking it by a 26-24 count. The Trojans then carried that momentum into the third set, taking it 25-14 to complete the sweep.
