Meade Aims to Play Angry in 2024
Meade head football coach Clint Kuhns has seen many Meade teams. He played at Meade and coached as MHS so he has observed many Meade senior classes. Kuhns, the third year head coach observed this year’s senior class plays their best when they play angry. Meade has continued their success since the 13-0 state championship season of 2021 going 9-2 in 2022 and 8-2 last year. Kuhns and the Buffaloes hope this moniker will carry Meade over the top in 2024.

First appearance ahead Monday for Emporia woman charged with drug distribution, aggravated child endangerment
A first court appearance is coming Monday for an Emporia woman accused of distributing methamphetamine, endangering a child and other charges. Anissa Gardner-Lagg, age 21, was arrested Thursday by Emporia Police. She was charged Friday with single counts of distributing a small amount of meth and possessing marijuana, meth and paraphernalia. She also has one count of aggravated child endangerment for allegedly causing a child under the age of 18 to be in an environment where she either knew or should have known illegal drug activity was underway.

City Commission approves fee increases for golf course and pool
Director of Parks Jeff Boyle presented proposed fee changes for the Golf Course and Pool for the 2025 and 2026 seasons during Thursday’s City Commission meeting. The proposed changes for the Fort Hays Municipal Golf Course keep the Junior golf rate of $10 for 18 holes the same, but would increase the fee for a regular 9-hole round from $16 to $17. The 18-hole weekday rate would increase from $22 to $23 and the weekend rate from $25 to $26. A single membership would increase from $535 to $575 and a couple membership would increase from $645 to $720. Family memberships would increase from $715 to $740. Trail fees would increase from $200 to $220. The cart shed fee would remain the same at $300.

Longtime Fifth District, Kansas Court of Appeals judge Gary Rulon passes away
Funeral services are coming at the end of next week for Gary Rulon, a longtime judge at the local and state levels. Rulon passed away Wednesday at the age of 83 following a lengthy illness. Services will be at 10 am Aug. 31 at the Grace United Methodist Church of Olathe. Visitation will precede the funeral at 9 am, with a graveside service following at Shawnee Mission Memory Garden.
