Logan hosts annual Freedom Festival with some of largest crowds yet
LOGAN — Another year of the West Virginia Freedom Festival has came and went, and downtown Logan saw some of its biggest crowds ever in 2024. For its 25th year in Logan, the Freedom Festival brought in 1990s country superstars Lonestar, a band known for numerous country chart hits like “No News,” “Come Cryin’ to Me,” “Smile,” “What About Now,” and “I’m Already There.” One of their songs, a ballad entitled “Amazed,” even topped the coveted Billboard Hot 100 in 1999.
Kentucky jail escapee captured in Mingo
A Pinsonfork, Kentucky, man has been returned to custody after he escaped from a work detail last week. Andrew J. Eastwood, 48, of Pond Creek Road, was booked at the Pike County Detention Center on charges of second-degree escape, probation violation, failure to appear, contempt of court and parole violation on June 19.

Troopers say man’s drowning death accidental
PEYTONA, W.Va. — A Boone County man drowned while fishing Saturday in the Big Coal River. State police troopers said Timmy Hager, 64, of Peytona, drowned after falling into the river while fishing near Peytona Costa Road. No foul play is suspected, according to troopers.
Matewan man charged following fatal shooting in Huntington
HUNTINGTON — A man has been charged in a fatal shooting that occurred Friday night in Huntington. Deonte Malik Joplin, 25, of Matewan, West Virginia, was jailed at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the Western Regional Jail and Correctional Facility. Bond was not set.

Pettry, Sr., 73 of Kopperston, WV, went home to his Heavenly Father on Friday, June 28, 2024, at Raleigh Center, Daniels, WV He was born May 11, 1951, in Charleston and was the son of the late Sherman M. And Gladys Mae Bailey Pettry. Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Darlene R. Pettry, twin daughters, Nikki and Mikki Pettry and a brother, Charles “Eddie” Pettry.

Man 9-11 softball team tops Logan for district title
The Man 9-11-year-old All-Star softball team defeated Logan 8-7 for the West Virginia District 2 Championship at the Man Little League field on June 26. Danika Blankenship pitched for Man and gave up just three hits while striking out 10 batters. Dakota Dent was the pitcher for Logan, and she had seven punchouts while surrendering three hits as well.

PEYTONA, W.Va. — A Peytona, West Virginia, man is dead after police say he drowned accidentally while fishing in the Big Coal River on Saturday, June 29. West Virginia State Police troopers responded to a call related to a drowning on Costa Road.
Logan 10-12 softball squad claims District 2 championship
The Logan 10-12-year-old All-Star softball team won the West Virginia District 2 Major League championship 6-5 over Man on June 25 at the Man Little League field. Both teams will advance to the state tournament in Fayetteville, which begins on Sunday.
Logan girls basketball seeing growth this summer
The Logan High School girls basketball team is in the midst of summer practice, and assistant coach Mike Tothe has seen a significant amount of growth from his squad. Head coach Kevin Gertz suffered an ischemic stroke in June and spent time at West Virginia University United Hospital Center as well as Logan Regional Medical Center.
