According to Boulder Magazine, the group originally started at Sports Garage, a cycling shop at 27th and Spruce streets in Boulder. The employees were going on weekly bike rides together and started inviting friends. Nowadays, the group has anywhere from 50 to 125 people each week.

There are no owners or official leaders, and the group has grown organically over the years. “Stewards” assist in organizing weekly rides and events by planning themes and determining locations.

Did I mention that many wear weekly themed costumes and fun getups? As mentioned, each week there is a new theme for riders to decorate their bikes or dress in. You can hear and see this group coming your way. By fun music playing, riders wishing you a “happy Thursday,” and bicycles decorated and lit up like a Christmas tree.

The group meets at a different location each week and rides different routes. So, keeping up with their social media sites on Instagram and Facebook are a must.

Recently they have been meeting at Greenleaf Park at 7:00p.m. with a 7:30p.m. “rollout.” Their most recent theme was “angels or demons.” Giving you the opportunity to dress as either.

This weekly bicycle ride brings people of all bicycle skill levels together. They are slow and fun. The events run from April through October. If you join them, make sure to stay for the outdoor dance party that follows the cruise. Follow the cruisers on Instagram or Facebook for information on rides and special events.

    They are not vandals

This wonderful group is not to be confused with a recent large group of middle school and high school students that also have meet-ups on Thursday nights. This other group is rumored to have been vandalizing parks, leaving tons of trash, and setting off fireworks.

The 30-year-old, “Thursday Night Cruiser Ride” group, rides through Boulder respectfully. They have a strong "Leave No Trace" and "Share the Road" ethics, and do not allow fireworks.

According to the “Thursday Night Cruiser Ride” Facebook page, their rules are simple:

    • “Have a Light (front, back, AND a fun one is best).
    • Stay to the Right (to allow for oncoming bike traffic, car traffic, and foot traffic).
    • Stop at Red Lights.
    • Do not litter - pack it out of sight (to a proper bin).
    • Call out - "Rider Up", "Walker Up", "Rider Back", "Car Back", etc. It's contagious and greatly increases safety for everyone.
    • Ride safe, moderate your substances, and HAVE FUN!
    • Ring your bells or toot your horns.
    • Say "Happy Thursday" often.”
