On September 16, 1810, a priest named Miguel Hidalgo gave a speech in the town of Dolores, Mexico. He urged Mexicans to revolt against Spanish colonial rule.

Latine vs. Latinx: How and Why They’re Used

You might have noticed that the event is using the word Latine. Latinx and Latine are gender-neutral versions of Latino and Latina. In the Spanish language, -o and -a endings correspond to the masculine and feminine forms of the word. Latino is often used as the default gender-neutral form (both in Spanish and English) for an individual of Latin American origin or descent.

The words Latinx and Latine are used by those who do not want to associate with gender. It is used when referring to nonbinary people or groups in which more than one gender is represented. You see Latinx more with English speakers. Latine is sometimes preferred, especially when communicating in Spanish.
