The bodies of two people found in a car near the intersection of Hammett Road and Highway 99 in Salida on Sunday evening have been identified by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office.

The man and woman are believed to have been killed in a murder-suicide, California Highway Patrol spokesman Officer Tom Olsen said.

The Modesto Fire Department reported that it responded to a call of an assault with a deadly weapon at about 6 p.m. Olsen said the 911 call indicated domestic violence. Emergency personnel that also included Stanislaus sheriff’s deputies found a Honda sedan parked on the east shoulder of the Hammett off-ramp. In it were the two bodies.

The man was identified as 59-year old Modesto resident Ghulam Sharifi. The woman was 45-year-old Modesto resident Nooria Sharifi.

A knife used in the killings was recovered, Olsen said.

The case is being investigated by the CHP.

“The CHP would like to emphasize there is no lingering threat tho the public,” the report reads.

Anyone with information on the incident is urged to call the CHP’s Modesto office at 209-356-2900 or 209-545-7440.
