A house fire in Modesto claimed one life Friday morning, according to the Modesto Fire Department.

Firefighters responded to a blaze on the 1600 block of Concord Avenue, where they encountered intense flames and thick black smoke engulfing the residence. The fire was beginning to spread to a neighboring house, prompting a second alarm for additional resources, MFD reported.

Modesto Police, American Medical Response, and the Stanislaus Regional Fire Investigation Unit assisted with traffic control, medical standby and investigating the fire’s cause.

After the fire was contained on the properties, officials discovered one person inside the home, who was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the fire department.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is currently underway. Further details have not yet been released.
