So, you like a challenge, testing yourself in the great outdoors of Oregon’s Willamette Valley, all while having fun in the process.

Something’s returning that may just fit the bill.

The second annual PNW Survival Games will take place on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 10-11, at the Ripple Creek Campground in Molalla. Building on the success of last year’s inaugural event, this year promises to be bigger and better, with an exciting lineup of survival experts and special guest appearances, according to co-founder Tony Peniche.

PNW Survival Games, created by Peniche and Phil Robinson, got off to a good start in 2023. Now, the pair are looking to take this year’s games up a notch – or two.

The PNW Survival Games is an annual survival challenge competition designed to educate and inspire participants in the art of wilderness survival. The event features hands-on training, competitive challenges, and opportunities to connect with leading experts in the survival community.

    How it Works:

Teams: All 30 participants are paired up into two-person teams that face off in a series of challenges based on the 7 Pillars of Survival. Contestants can register as a team or individually and will be paired up with another contestant at random.

Challenges: All challenges start with a 30-minute lesson from an expert survival instructor and then the teams will have 60 minutes to complete each challenge and earn points.

    What’s happening on Day 1:

Shelter Building: Build a weather-resistant two-person shelter made from natural materials.

Weapon Building: Build a primitive bow and arrow and complete a target obstacle course.

Traps & Snares: Various traps and snares from natural materials and paracord.

Fire & Water: Primitive fire starting and water purification.

Feast & Entertainment: A full buffet-style dinner featuring a 70-pound slow-cooked pig. (Vegan options available upon request)

    What’s happening on Day 2:

First Aid: Stop the bleed, splint the leg, build a makeshift stretcher, and drag your partner to safety.

Water Carry Vessel: Transport fresh water using only a log and paracord.

Raft Building: Build a log raft, navigate the river, and collect multiple flags.

Awards Ceremony: Points are tallied, and the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winning teams are announced.

Along the way, competitors will be guided by experts in a variety of survival fields. Here’s a look at who will be there.

Expert Instructors: Sharon Ross (Afrovivalist), Biko Wright (Alone Season 8 Runner-Up), Peter Bauer (Re-Wild Portland).

Special Guests: Tory Belleci (Mythbusters), Laura Zerra (Naked & Afraid), Ray Livingston (Alone), Natalie Bonthius (Survival Med).

    Ticket Information:

Tickets are priced at $395 per person, which includes: a camping/parking spot, admission to compete in the PNW Survival Games, a gear bag containing all materials needed to compete (retail value of $750) along with additional swag and gifts, all drinks and meals for the two-day event, including a buffet-style rotisserie-cooked pig dinner on the first night (meal alternatives available upon request), BYOB policy.

“The PNW Survival Games provide an unparalleled opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts and novices alike to learn essential survival skills in a fun and competitive environment,” said Peniche. “Participants will be guided by some of the best experts in the field and will also have the chance to meet and learn from well-known figures in the survival and adventure community.”
