2-year-old boy shot inside Connecticut home, mother attempts to rush toddler to hospital

A 2-year-old boy is recovering after he was shot and injured at a home in Connecticut.

It happened on Tuesday around 9:30 p.m. on Wheeler Road in Monroe.

It's believed the same round struck the boy in his hand and foot.

Police say that the boy's panicked mother discovered the boy shot and tried to rush him to a hospital on Route 110 before calling 911.

Emergency crews reached the vehicle about a quarter mile from the shooting scene.

He was rushed to Bridgeport Hospital and was later transferred to Yale New Haven Hospital for surgery and is expected to survive.

Police are investigating the circumstances leading up to the shooting -- saying there were several people in the house at the time. Some of those people are cooperating with investigators and others are not.

While the investigation is still in the early stages, police say criminal charges are possible.

First Selectman Terrence P. Rooney released a statement saying:

"Our hearts go out to the family and our community as the police continue their investigation of last night's shooting incident involving a young child. I humbly ask that as concerned compassionate community members, we respect the privacy of the family and the articulate efforts of our law enforcement professionals at this time."
