RAGBRAI LI begins in southwest Iowa in pleasant summer conditions
GLENWOOD, Iowa — The Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa is now underway, as the 51st installment began in Glenwood along the Missouri River Sunday morning. The 7-day RAGBRAI will take riders on a southerly route across Iowa, making overnight stops in Red Oak, Atlantic, Winterset, Knoxville, Ottumwa, and Mt. Pleasant before arriving in Burlington Saturday to dip their tires in the Mississippi River.

AMES, Iowa — Sondra Wilson claims that the state denied her Medicaid coverage for her gender reassignment surgery. Wilson doesn’t have a law degree, but is representing herself in this case. She said she reached out to about 50 different law firms across the state and couldn’t afford any of the quotes she was given.
Knoxville home destroyed in fire
KNOXVILLE, Iowa — A Knoxville home sustained fire, heat, smoke and water damage during a house fire on Sunday afternoon. According to the Knoxville Fire Department, the fire was reported shortly after 2 p.m. Sunday. When crews arrived, they found smoke pushing from the roof and eaves of the house.

DES MOINES, Iowa — A church that says it's the oldest historical Black church on Des Moines' east side is celebrating a major anniversary. Bethel African Methodist Espiscopal Church, led by Pastor Josephine Wolder, is 115 years old. Over the weekend, it celebrated the momentous occasion with special events. On Saturday, there was a Praise Team Dance Celebration featuring teams from a dozen historic Black churches in Des Moines. A worship celebration was held Sunday with a special reunion choir featuring current and past Bethel A.M.E. members.
