MONROE — This August students can pick up a welder and an opportunity to learn some new skills. Monroe County Community College is holding a second cohort for their Apprenticeship Readiness Program, two months after their first cohort in June. According to a recent release, the cohort is free and will take place over two weekends: August 9-10, 16-17, both lasting from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The cohort is for those who are interested in entering skilled trades and will provide basic training in trade math, welding basics, millwright basics, and construction. It will also provide prospective apprentices with opportunities to form professional connections, as local employers and unions will be at the cohorts.

"Apprenticeship is a very popular avenue for people who don't want to go the traditional college route, and so I'm just trying to open up those doors for people by connecting them with opportunities like this free mini seminar course, if that's what you want to call it," said Kristina Henry, MCCC's experiential learning coordinator and main organizer of the event.

Upon completion, students will receive a Certificate of Completion from MCCC and a tool set as a graduation gift, qualify for two college credits in the technology area, and be provided with vouchers for OSHA 10 certificate preparation (for those who are interested).

To be eligible for the cohort, students must have a high school diploma or GED. The cohort will be held in Career Technology Center on the MCCC campus.
